Thanks to these two sides Group D has all of a sudden become the group of intrigue. Serbia stunned the powerful German machine 1-0 in the second game of group stage play while Australia battled with 10 men to a 1-1 draw with Ghana to keep its World Cup pulse beating.
It is currently Ghana on top of Group D with four points ahead of Germany and Serbia (3 points each) and Australia with its one point. This could be one of the more exciting World Cup games because of the situations each country finds itself in. A draw between the two sides could potentially send them both packing so a quickened pace and visible sense of urgency can be expected.
If both Group D games draw (Germany and Ghana will be playing simultaneously) then it will be Ghana and Germany advancing and Serbia and Australia leaving the pitch for good together. The Socceroos get through with a win and a Ghana win. That is their only guarantee. If Australia were to win and Germany also wins then tiebreakers come into effect but Germany will almost undoubtedly advance based on its 4-0 win over Australia.
Serbia could advance to the knockout stage in its in World Cup debut with a win or a draw. A Serbia draw and Ghana win will have Serbia finishing second while a Serbia draw and a Germany win will force a tiebreaker between Serbia and Ghana for second place.
Those scenarios will begin to unfold Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. EST. Serbia and Australia will meet in Mbombela Stadium. It should make for a wild afternoon.
Serbia coach Radomir Antic has to be worried about his team’s 180-minute World Cup rollercoaster taking another dip. After his squad made a mediocre World Cup debut in a 1-0 loss to Ghana it came striking back with the stunner over Germany. The Aussies now pose a real threat if Serbia were to take them lightly and have a letdown after the monumental win over Germany.
Australia has navigated the first two games of this World Cup without its full complement of players as two red cards have wreaked havoc with coach PimVerbeek’s squad. Tim Cahill received a red card in the drubbing at the hands of the Germans and was lost for the Ghana game. That proved to be a blessing in disguise as his replacement Brett Holman put Australia on top early on with a goal.
Now with Harry Kewell serving a one-match suspension after his apparent handball cost Australia the lead and an 11th player against Ghana it appears to be Holman who will be called upon again. This time though he will be playing alongside Cahill. The hope is dim for Australia but it is certainly there.

Australia vs. Serbia Picks and Predictions
Australia Will Win If: It executes the risky but necessary strategy set forward by skipper Pim Verbeek. He has already promised an all-out onslaught on the Serbian net. He knows his team needs a win and needs plenty of help in goal differential so chances will be taken. This will leave Australia extremely vulnerable but the circumstances call for it. If Australia can establish a relentless attack it has a real chance to keep Serbia on its heels.
Serbia Will Win If: It weathers an early Australian storm. A draw could end up hurting both teams but Serbia can ill-afford to get into a back and forth shootout with the Aussies who have much less to lose than Serbia. It needs to remain patient and rely on its rock-solid defense that has only conceded one goal (a penalty kick) in the first 180 minutes of World Cup play.
