Summary of Last Season

Last season couldn’t have gone any better for the World Series-winning Texas Rangers. Not only did they claim their first title in franchise history, but they also got to dethrone their division rival, the Houston Astros, on the way there. Overall, the Rangers finished with a 90-72 record despite a lot of injuries to their pitching staff throughout the season. Their record was eight games worse than their expected record of 98-64, in large part due to their 2-8 record in extra innings.

The lineup was loaded and saw production from top to bottom. Marcus Semien led the team with a 7.4 WAR, as he slashed .276/.348/.478 with 29 homeruns and 100 RBIs. Corey Seager finished with a WAR of 6.9, while he led the team with a 1.013 OPS while clubbing 33 homeruns and adding 96 RBIs in just 119 games last season. Adolis Garcia rounded out the three-headed monster for the Rangers, as he posted a 4.2 WAR as he led the team with 39 homeruns and 107 RBIs. Those three were complimented nicely by the likes of Jonah Heim, Nathaniel Lowe, Leody Taveras and Josh Jung, who all posted a WAR of 2.4 or more. Texas would finish 3rd in OPS, homeruns, runs, and 2nd in hits.

As for the pitching, midseason acquisition Jordan Montgomery was a game-changer as he posted a 2.79 ERA over 11 starts with Texas. He also posted a 2.90 ERA in the postseason. Dane Dunning and Nathan Eovaldi also had solid seasons, posting sub 4.00 ERAs. This team did all this while missing Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer, who were limited to a combined 14 starts. The bullpen struggled in the regular season but rebounded in a huge way to end up being the biggest X-Factor in the club’s World Series run. Jose Leclerc led the way out of the bullpen with a 2.68 ERA, while Will Smith anchored the staff with 22 saves on the year, despite posting a 4.40 ERA.

Texas Rangers Key Additions/Losses

The Rangers lost a lot of key role players at the start of the offseason via free agency. Jordan Montgomery, Mitch Garver, Chris Stratton, Aroldis Chapman, Jake Odorizzi, Robbie Grossman, Martin Perez, and Will Smith, among others, are the ones not reuniting with the Rangers.

Texas began reinforcing the pitching staff by signing Kirby Yates, David Robertson, and Tyler Mahle last December. Other than those two, the Rangers took a lot of fliers on veterans, signing names like catcher Andrew Knapp, first baseman Jarred Walsh, infielder Matt Duffy, and pitchers Shane Greene, Austin Pruitt, Jonathan Holder, Jose Urena, Chasen Shreve, and Danny Duffy. to minor league deals.

Texas Rangers Prospect Outlook

The phrase “the rich get richer” is true for the Rangers, as they have six of their top 10 prospects ready to make an impact at the big-league level. As for the arms, fifth-ranked prospect Jack Leither got an invite to big league camp, where he will join the likes of Owen White (8th), Marc Church (19th), Jose Corniell (23rd), Antione Kelly (26th), and Cole Winn (28th), who are all top ranked prospects currently listed on the team’s 40-man roster.

Texas Rangers X-Factors

Max Scherzer/Jacob deGrom- Though they aren’t expected back till the summer months, they are expected back. If these two former aces can return to form, the Rangers will once again be the best team in baseball. New addition Tyler Mahle is also out with an injury, but it’s how you finish that matters. If they all return to the rotation in old form, and pair with Nathan Eovaldi and Dane Dunning, the rotation will be lethal.

Evan Carter/Josh Jung duo- Yes, another duo being labeled as an X-Factor for the Rangers. The lineup already features proven names like Marcus Semien, Corey Seager, Adolis Garcia, and Nathaniel Lowe. However, if Carter and Jung can add to that, it will give the Rangers one of the most complete lineups in the MLB.

Texas Rangers Expectations

Back-to-back, nothing less. The Rangers are clearly sitting in their championship window for the next couple of years. And with one successful campaign in the books, fans will want another. The rotation will be shaky to start the season, and there is a chance that Scherzer, deGrom, and Mahle won’t be the same upon their return. However, Texas has depth at the position and a halfway decent farm system to utilize in order to add to their big-league club either by way of trades or call-ups.

They will compete for the World Series. They are a 90+ win team, making the projected 88.5 total look like free money. The Rangers will be in one of the toughest divisions in baseball, but I think the offense will take a lot of pressure off their pitching and then the return of the aces will skyrocket the staff’s performance. I think the Rangers are the best team in the American League.
