NFL Survivor Pool Picks and Advice: Week 2
by Matt Severance - 9/15/2010
Hopefully you followed my Survivor Pool advice in Week 1 and didn’t fall into the trap that was the Chargers at Chiefs game on Monday night by picking San Diego as your survivor team. The New Arrowhead Stadium was rocking and Kansas City ended a five-game skid to its AFC West rivals with a 21-14 win despite totaling all of nine first downs and gaining less than 200 total yards.
NFL Survivor Pool Picks and Advice: Week 1
by Matt Severance - 9/8/2010
Welcome back to the weekly Survivor Pool advice column, where hopefully we can have the success of 2009 (knocked out in Week 15) instead of 2008 (Week 6). You won’t usually see this column quite so early in the week (the more time to find out about injuries), but with the Vikings and Saints opening the season on Thursday night in an NFC Championship Game rematch, here we are.
NFL Survivor Pool: Advice, Tips and Strategy
by Matt Severance - 8/27/2010
Enjoy those NFL Survivor Pools this year because a few big NFL events are likely on the horizon that will change them. Of course the first is the presumed labor stoppage that seems imminent for next year – I don’t think there will be scab players in 2011 so you’ll have to live with a college football survivor pool of some sort (can’t say I’ve been in one of those yet). Although the NFL certainly should get going at some point next year, but I wouldn’t count on Week 1.
NFL Survivor Pool Picks: Week 17
by Matt Severance - 12/29/2009
It’s hard to believe it’s already the final week of the NFL season and thus my last Survivor Pool story of 2009. I hope my advice was helpful and that you get to begin the New Year with some extra cash in your pocket. Going out in Week 15 certainly beats losing in Week 6 like in 2008.
NFL Survivor Pool Picks: Week 16
by Matt Severance - 12/23/2009
Well, last week’s Survivor Pool results were one of those glass half-full, glass half-empty deals. I recommended the Denver Broncos in Week 15, while admitting I wasn’t really very confident in Denver against the Raiders (more so not that confident in the Broncos than any opponent).
NFL Survivor Pool Picks: Week 15
by Matt Severance - 12/16/2009
Have you cashed in yet? It’s somewhat rare that Survivor Pools drag on to Week 15, but it of course depends on how many players you began with. If you have been following my advice and taking my top pick each week, you are still going.
NFL Survivor Pool Picks: Week 14
by Matt Severance - 12/9/2009
Week 13 almost was very, very good to those of you following my Survivor Pool advice. I warned heavily against taking the Saints last week (you didn’t have that option if you have chosen my top recommendation each week), and New Orleans was incredibly fortunate to win in Washington. All the Skins needed was a chip-shot field goal to take a late two-score lead, but Shaun Suisham pushed the attempt wide right from 23 yards with 1:52 to play.

I don’t know about you, but I’m counting my Survivor Pool money already. I know, you should never put the horse before the cart, but that cash sure would come in handy for a little Christmas shopping! Let’s hope I didn’t just jinx myself and those of you following my advice.
NFL Survivor Pool Picks: Week 12
by Matt Severance - 11/25/2009
Thank you, Chiefs. Thank you, Raiders. Here’s guessing that Kansas City’s upset of Pittsburgh and/or Oakland’s surprise of Cincinnati last week certainly whittled down your competition in your NFL Survivor Pool.
NFL Survivor Pool Picks: Week 11
by Matt Severance - 11/18/2009
I warned against you picking Denver at Washington, Atlanta at Carolina and Dallas at Green Bay, and all three visiting favorites lost. I also said to stay away from Pittsburgh against Cincinnati, and the Bengals completed the season sweep.
NFL Survivor Pool Picks: Week 10
by Matt Severance - 11/11/2009
The Survivor Pools really start to get interesting this week, not only because you have made it to a double-digit week and are still kicking, but also because the NFL Network’s Thursday package kicks off this week (Bears and 49ers) and the bye weeks are now all but over – just the Giants and Texans on the bye in Week 10, and then it’s done.
NFL Survivor Pool Picks: Week 9
by Matt Severance - 11/4/2009
Week 8 in the NFL was another very chalk week of results. Maybe Carolina beating Arizona knocked a player or two out of your Suicide Pool, but that’s the only game I would call truly surprising last week. I recommended the Chargers, and they beat Oakland for the 13th straight game.
NFL Survivor Pool Picks: Week 8
by Matt Severance - 10/28/2009
Last week was a definite chalk week in the NFL, with only two possible upsets likely to have affected anyone in your Suicide Pool: the Cardinals winning at the New York Giants and the Bills winning at Carolina.
NFL Survivor Pool Picks: Week 7
by Matt Severance - 10/21/2009
What is it with Week 6 and the Washington Redskins? Last year in Week 6, the Skins knocked me out of the Survivor Pool with a home loss to the dismal Rams. And then last week, Washington lost at home to the winless Chiefs. Thankfully, we didn’t recommend the Redskins, whom we have already used in our 2009 Survivor Pool Picks. But there may have been a few folks in your pool who did play Washington last week and are now out.
NFL Survivor Pool Picks: Week 6
by Matt Severance - 10/14/2009
Last week we recommended the Eagles, and they had no trouble at all with the Tampa Bay Bucs. We also included the Giants, Steelers, Panthers and Ravens as five to “swear by” with only the Ravens losing. In the “scared by” category, we hit on three teams we warned you not to play on: the Patriots at Denver, the Bills against Cleveland and the Jets at Miami.
NFL Survivor Pool Picks: Week 5
by Matt Severance - 10/7/2009
Last week my top pick for your Survivor Pools was the Houston Texans, which is the first time I have recommended a below-.500 team so far in the two years I have been doing this column. But of course the Texans had no trouble with an Oakland offense that is the worst in the NFL in terms of yards per game.
NFL Survivor Pool Picks: Week 4
by Matt Severance - 9/30/2009
Let’s just reiterate that the only thing that matters in a Survivor Pool is to advance. I throw out this disclaimer because other than recommending the Baltimore Ravens last week as the top choice, my advice was pretty shoddy. On to our Week 4 picks, which is the first week of several where byes are a factor. And it’s one of those weeks where there appear to be a lot of fairly even matchups.
NFL Survivor Pool Picks: Week 3
by Matt Severance - 9/23/2009
Those #&@*$#& Redskins! They almost knocked me out of my Survivor Pool for the second year in a row at home against the inept St. Louis Rams. Washington couldn’t even manage a single touchdown against the Rams this time but did hang on for a 9-7 victory. Crisis averted!
NFL Survivor Pool Picks: Week 2
by Matt Severance - 9/17/2009
I had my lead for this story all but written. I was watching the “Monday Night Football” opener this week, and it seemed a sure thing that the Buffalo Bills were going to upset the New England Patriots – just as I warned you might happen in last week’s Survivor Pool story. No doubt a Pats’ loss would have eliminated at least a few members of your pool, and I felt a small sense of superiority or at least sageness (that a word?) … and then Leodis McKelvin had a Leon Lett moment by trying to return a kickoff with less than two minutes left.

FAQs
What are NFL Survivor Pool Picks
NFL Survivor Pool Picks are selections released by reputable sources, such as Doc's Sports, for the survivor pool that you are in. For over half a century, Doc's has been a leader in the gambling information industry, and utilizing their NFL Survivor Pool Picks can greatly increase your chances of winning your pool. Doc's NFL survivor pool picks will normally be released between Tuesday and Thursday each week of the NFL season and will give a ranked list of the strongest picks for the week.
What are the Basic Rules for NFL Football Survivor Contests?
NFL Football Survivor Pools usually follow this basic format:
1. Team Selection: Each week participants select one NFL team that they believe is most likely to win their game. The catch is, once that team has been used, it cannot be used for the rest of the season.
2. Winning Requirements: To survive and advance each week, your selected team must win. Ties and losses eliminate you from the contest. This is where the strategy comes into play, because if you use the best selections early on, later in the season you're left with less talented squads to choose from.
3. Last Person Standing: Each week the field is reduced until just one participant is remaining. This means successfully picking a winner until you are the last player left.
4. Contest Duration: Leagues usually last the duration of the football season, although some use a playoff format where the top portion of the league continues to play until the last person is standing.
5. Tiebreakers: In the event of a tie among players, tiebreakers such as total points scored or the record of the last team picked can be used to determine a winner.
It's important to note that each league is different and it is vital to understand all of the rules and nuances of your league. For example, some survivor pools use the point spread for the game to determine the winner, while there are other pools where you simply must pick the winner of the game.
What is a Survivor Pool Grid?
A survivor pool grid is a visual representation, usually in the form of a chart, that tracks the competitors and the teams they used each week. It provides transparency for the integrity of the group.
What is the Circa Survivor Pool?
The Circa Survivor Pool is renowned for being one of the largest and most prestigious survivor pools, with a buy-in of $10,000. It attracts significant attention due to its immense prize pool, often reaching millions of dollars. In 2022, a staggering 6,133 participants joined the pool, competing for a prize pool of $6.13 million.
What is the DraftKings Survivor Pool?
DraftKings offers many different Survivor Pools, but two in particular gain wide attention. The first, with a prize pool of $30,000, is incredibly popular because of the free entry fee. The other is a $1 million guarantee, for an entry fee of $100. The free contest only allows you one entry, while the $100 tourney has a cap of 10 entries.
What is an NFL Survivor Loser Pool?
These types of pools, also known as Loser Pools or Reverse Survivor Pools, offer a unique twist on the Survivor Pool concept by forcing the contestant to pick one team that loses every week. Once you pick a team that wins, you are eliminated from the contest. The last person remaining that has picked a loser in each game is declared the winner. Also, some second-chance pools are called "loser pools". If many contestants are eliminated early in the season because of a plethora of upsets, the pool runner might create a second pool called a loser pool.
What is an NFL Confidence Pool?
An NFL Confidence Pool is a popular type of football pool where participants assign confidence points to the predicted straight-up winners of the NFL games for that particular week. The points range from 1 (least confident) to the highest number of games for the week. Participants pick based on their varying levels of certainty to the winners of the week's game. Doc's also offers free NFL confidence pool picks each week throughout the pro football season.
What are NFL Office Pool Picks?
NFL office pool picks are ATS picks for every game for each week of the pro football season. Many office pools ask competitors to pick every game against the spread each week. Doc's Sports offers free NFL office pool picks every week of the pro football season. Some office pools require contestants to pick a certain number of games each week. One popular variation is for players to pick five games each week ATS, which follows the model of many of the top pickem contests in Las Vegas.
