Senior Investment Odds to Win the 2017 Preakness Stakes with Picks and Predictions
by Trevor Whenham - 5/16/2017
Every good Triple Crown race needs long shots - the kind that will go off at big prices but which are interesting enough to be at least a little viable and could potentially get into the exotics and help the payout. Senior Investment qualifies on that front. He has a chance to be the longest shot on the board - though he'll likely go off at shorter odds than Term of Art, I'd guess. And he won his last race, has some class, and though he is far behind the top horses here he isn't awful by any means. But is he good enough to trust?
Term of Art Odds to Win the 2017 Preakness Stakes with Picks and Predictions
by Trevor Whenham - 5/16/2017
Doug O'Neill won his second Kentucky Derby last year, but he has had troubles recapturing that magic this year. His top contender, Iliad, was prematurely retired. Irap was a shocking winner of the Blue Grass Stakes but was a dismal 18th in the Derby. And now he made the late decision to bring Term of Art to the Preakness - he was the last horse added to the field. And this colt is quite likely to be the longest shot on the board in this race. So, I feel like I already know the answer, but I still have to ask - can O'Neill win his second Preakness with this horse?
Cloud Computing Odds to Win the 2017 Preakness Stakes with Picks and Predictions
by Trevor Whenham - 5/15/2017
New shooters in the Preakness Stakes often face the same criticism - that they are hard to take seriously because if they were good enough to contend with Derby horses then they would have made the Derby field. This year, though, things are a little more interesting. Both Cloud Computing and Conquest Mo Money had the points to race in the Derby but opted out - Cloud Computing due to inexperience, and Conquest Mo Money because of the cost of supplementing him for the race.
Conquest Mo Money Odds to Win the 2017 Preakness Stakes with Picks and Predictions
by Trevor Whenham - 5/15/2017
Like Cloud Computing, this is a colt that had the points necessary to run in the Kentucky Derby but opted not to. Cloud Computing was held out due to inexperience - he has only three career starts and didn't debut until February. For this colt, though, the reasoning was more practical - he is not Triple Crown nominated, so running in the Derby would have cost $200,000. This race is $50,000 less and much less crowded, so it makes financial sense. It's still a pretty big investment, though. So, can Conquest Mo Money warrant that expenditure?
2017 Preakness Stakes Expert Handicapping: Early Look at Field
by Trevor Whenham - 5/8/2017
The Preakness field always winds up looking different by post time than it seems like it will now - I am writing this on the Monday after the Derby. As it stands now, though, we are looking at about 10 or 11 horses in the Preakness. That number could grow as we always seem to find a horse or two from off the radar to enter as the race nears. However big the field is, the task for the horses is clear - to make sure that Always Dreaming isn't gifted the easy race that he had in Kentucky. He was the best horse on the day, but when the track is as sloppy as it was and jockey John Velazquez finishes the race on his first set of goggles and with pants as white as the snow then you know that things went his way.
Kentucky Derby Horses that Could Run in the 2017 Preakness Stakes
by Trevor Whenham - 5/8/2017
It used to be that when a horse was entered in the Kentucky Derby you could also assume he would head to the Preakness as long as he stayed healthy - or at least it felt that way. Now, though, we just assume that we won't see most Derby horses again just two weeks later. Last year only three Derby horses - Nyquist, Exaggerator, and Lani - headed to Baltimore, and sadly that wasn't particularly shocking. The Preakness is always better when it is full of Derby entrants. So, how many Derby horses will there be in the Preakness this year? So far, it's shaping up to be reasonably good, actually:

Always Dreaming was impressive in winning the Kentucky Derby, but he hasn't scared anyone off when it comes to facing him in the Preakness. At this stage four Derby rivals are lined up to take another shot at him, and seven or eight other horses are rumored to be considering toeing the line as well - including two that could come over from England.
Can Always Dreaming win the Triple Crown? Expert Predictions and Analysis
by Trevor Whenham - 5/8/2017
Now that Always Dreaming has won the Kentucky Derby, we are left with the one question we have to ask every year at this time - can Always Dreaming win the Triple Crown? After almost believing it would never happen again, we learned two years ago that it was possible. But can it happen again so soon? Or will Always Dreaming go the way of so many other talented, dominant Derby winners who run into a hurdle they can't get over later on? Can Always Dreaming find immortality?:
Preakness Stakes Betting Help: How Kentucky Derby Winners have Fared in Second Leg
by Victor Ryan - 5/20/2016
It's been a nice run of late for Kentucky Derby winners in the Preakness Stakes. The last two Kentucky Derby winners (American Pharoah, California Chrome) and three of the last four (I'll Have Another in 2012) have also taken down the second jewel of racing's Triple Crown.
2016 Preakness Stakes Predictions
by Trevor Whenham - 5/19/2016
I wish that this Preakness was setting up as a more compelling race. Don't get me wrong - it's pretty bettable - it just isn't exciting. It wasn't a hugely-compelling Derby, but Nyquist's total dominance and bad days by the rest of the most interesting horses in the field aside from Exaggerator means that we have a Preakness packed with new shooters.
2016 Preakness Stakes Post Positions and Expert Betting Advice
by Robert Ferringo - 5/19/2016
I know this is going to sound like a gross oversimplification, but the fastest horse is generally the horse that wins the Preakness Stakes. Earth-shattering analysis - I know. But the fact is that the Preakness is the shortest of the three Triple Crown races. The Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes rely on a combination of running style, in-race strategy, and post positioning. But the Preakness is an all-out sprint and a total free-for-all that rewards raw, intense speed.
How to Bet the Preakness Stakes in 2016
by Trevor Whenham - 5/19/2016
The Preakness Stakes is a different animal than the other two legs of the Triple Crown. In the Derby we have to deal with the massive field and the challenging distance. The Belmont features a crippling distance, often tired horses, and a stretch that goes on forever. They are both very tough races to handicap. The Preakness is gentler for handicappers, though - easier to predict, and less prone to upsets.
2016 Preakness Stakes Wagering Help: Handicapping the Jockeys
by Trevor Whenham - 5/19/2016
The story of the jockeys in the Preakness is different than in the Derby or the Belmont. Every jockey wants a mount in the Derby, and many of the top jocks are in New York anyway, so they are around to pick up mounts in the Belmont. Unless a guy has already established a mount leading into the Preakness, though, it is less common to see a high-level jockey pick up a spot mount for this race. The reason is simple - Pimlico is not a place top riders ride, and many would choose to stay at home at their regular tracks and ride in more lucrative races than the Pimlico undercard could offer.
2016 Preakness Stakes Betting Advice: Live Long Shots
by Trevor Whenham - 5/19/2016
I have to admit that I am finding it harder to get excited for this edition of the Preakness than I do most years. I think it has to do with the field, mostly. Aside from Exaggerator, the top threats avoided clashing with Nyquist again so soon, so we are left with a fairly-large but mostly-uninspiring group.
2016 Preakness Stakes Betting and Handicapping: Pace Scenario
by Trevor Whenham - 5/19/2016
In the Kentucky Derby, the early speed was a big question mark. Danzig Candy had speed, but would he be pushed enough to move quickly and set the race up for others? Who would go with him? As it turned out, it was Nyquist, and though he ran fast enough early fractions to set the race up for closers the problem for them was that he never gave up the lead once he got it.
2016 Preakness Stakes Handicapping: Analysis of the Trainers
by Trevor Whenham - 5/18/2016
The trainers are always a big story heading into any major race, and that is no exception in the 2016 Preakness Stakes. They are the decision-makers, the coaches, and the therapists. In bigger stables they are more like CEOs, while in some of the smaller operations in the race this year they are everything from public spokesman to head blanket washer. They will get a lot of credit if they win and will almost certainly be blamed for a loss. They have a very tough job.
Uncle Lino Odds to Win the 2016 Preakness Stakes with Picks and Predictions
by Trevor Whenham - 5/18/2016
There is good news and bad news as this colt travels from California to Maryland for the Preakness Stakes. The good news is that he has spent the spring racing against the top horses in California - or at least the top horses not named Nyquist. The bad news is that he hasn't beaten them. He's followed Derby entrant Mor Spirit to the wire three times, Derby runner-up and Preakness entrant Exaggerator twice, and Derby entrant Danzig Candy once. So he's been good enough to consistently compete with the cream of the crop but never good enough to beat them.
Awesome Speed Odds to Win the 2016 Preakness Stakes with Picks and Predictions
by Trevor Whenham - 5/18/2016
Almost every year in the Preakness there is a horse you need to be aware of - one called the crab cake factor by many. Maryland is really only relevant to elite national racing one or two days of the year. The rest of the time it is a lower-level circuit - a good circuit, but not a top one. When a local horse is entered in the Preakness, then, it becomes a bit of an event - a chance to show the world that Maryland racing has some game.
Stradivari Odds to Win the 2016 Preakness Stakes with Picks and Predictions
by Trevor Whenham - 5/17/2016
Todd Pletcher had a disastrous Kentucky Derby - as he so often does. In response he did what he also so often does - forgot it ever happened and moved on to the next runners in his vast stable for the Preakness. Destin and Outwork are on the sidelines waiting for their next assignment, and in their place is a less-experienced but far-more-intriguing runner than those two.
Collected Odds to Win the 2016 Preakness Stakes with Picks and Predictions

Bob Baffert is not having the Triple Crown year this year that he did in 2015. Of course, no one else has had that kind of year since 1978, either, so he doesn't need to feel too bad. His lone shooter in the Kentucky Derby, Mor Spirit, didn't have a particularly good day in finishing 10th and now sits on the sidelines waiting for his next start.
