PGA Tour Picks: Farmers Insurance Open Odds and Predictions
by Alan Matthews - 1/23/2013
Before I get to this week’s preview of the Farmers Insurance Open at storied Torrey Pines outside of San Diego as well as Phil Mickelson sticking his foot in his mouth, let’s recap my predictions from last week’s European Tour event in Abu Dhabi.
PGA Tour Picks: Sony Open in Hawaii Odds and Predictions
by Alan Matthews - 1/9/2013
Well, it was quite the unusual opener on the PGA Tour at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions. Because of high winds in Maui, the tournament’s start was postponed and it ended up being shortened to 54 holes and a Tuesday finish. I don’t have any statistical records to back this up, but I can’t remember such a quick turnaround for the next week’s event as will be the case starting Thursday at the Sony Open in Hawaii – thankfully the players only have to travel from Maui to Honolulu.
PGA Tour Picks: Hyundai Tournament of Champions Betting Odds
by Alan Matthews - 1/3/2013
The incredibly short golf offseason is already in the books, and the PGA Tour tees it up for the first time in 2013 starting Friday (one of only two events with a Friday-Monday schedule) at the Plantation Course at Kapalua in Maui for the winners-only Hyundai Tournament of Champions. If you didn’t win a sanctioned PGA Tour event in 2012, then you aren’t in this week’s field. Overall, 30 of 37 eligible golfers are playing at Kapalua.
Golf Odds and Predictions: World Challenge Props and Picks
by Alan Matthews - 11/28/2012
Kudos to Rory McIlroy last week at the European Tour finale in Dubai, as he completed an amazing season with his fifth worldwide victory while surpassing Tiger Woods’ record for combined earnings in one year. I thought Rory was spent after missing the cut in his tournament prior and that his thoughts were on a nice vacation with girlfriend and tennis star Caroline Wozniacki. McIlroy now has a whopping 17 Top-10 finishes in his past 26 European Tour events dating to his 2011 U.S. Open victory (majors and WGC events count as Euro events as well).
European Tour Golf Odds and Predictions: UBS Hong Kong Open Picks
by Alan Matthews - 11/13/2012
The PGA Tour’s season officially ended last week at Disney, so now we get a healthy dose of golf’s “silly season” here in the United States until the 2013 season-opening Hyundai Tournament of Champions at Kapalua in Hawaii. Before I look at this week’s UBS Hong Kong Open on the European Tour I would like to recap last week.
PGA Golf Odds and Predictions: Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Classic Picks
by Alan Matthews - 11/7/2012
Last year’s PGA Tour season-ending Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic was very unique. Normally, you won’t see any top players competing at Disney because they are either resting from the long season or off playing lucrative silly season events or in Europe. The multi-millionaires are “above” playing in the Fall Series.
Golf Odds and Predictions: WGC-HSBC Champions Props and Picks
by Alan Matthews - 10/30/2012
It’s a tremendous field this week at the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions event, perhaps the best group we will see the rest of 2012. Seven of the Top 10 in the world are playing on the Mission Hills Golf Course in Guangdong, China. However, golf fans and bettors will notice two big names who aren’t here: Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods.
Asian Tour Golf Odds and Predictions: CIMB Classic Props and Picks
by Alan Matthews - 10/23/2012
There is two-week break on the PGA Tour right now, with the Fall Series’ final event starting Nov. 8 at Disney before we really get into golf’s silly season. So this week, it’s a preview of the Asian Tour. Yep, you heard that right. It’s the CIMB Classic in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. But there’s a decent field, led by Tiger Woods, because of a good purse and a few financial incentives. Tiger no doubt got a nice chunk of change to play in Malaysia for the first time since he won the individual and team titles in the 1999 World Cup.
PGA Tour Golf Odds and Predictions: McGladrey Classic Props and Picks
by Alan Matthews - 10/17/2012
Maybe I should just stick to previewing fall events. It’s been a good run on golf recommendations starting with the Ryder Cup. And last week was as well. No, I didn’t get the Frys.com Open winner, choosing Brendan Steele at 50/1 as the best long-shot value. He missed the cut, but I rather knew he was “all or nothing” there. I did, however, hit on Vijay Singh at -115 in a head-to-head matchup with Ernie Els. Singh finished T4 and the Big Easy T16. I also hit on Sweden’s Jonas Blixt to be the top European finisher at 4/1. Blixt took home his first career PGA Tour title, vaulting him from No. 60 to No. 35 on the money list (Top 30 brings extra benefits).
PGA Tour Golf Odds and Predictions: Frys.com Open Props and Picks
by Alan Matthews - 10/10/2012
Eight of the top players in the world are over in Turkey playing in the World Golf Finals, but the early-week start to that cash-grab event made it to tough to preview in a timely fashion here at Doc’s Sports. So this week it’s again a PGA Tour Fall Series preview with the Frys.com Open at CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin, Calif. It’s the first official Tour event in that state since the U.S. Open, and the Fall Series will conclude back East with events in Georgia and Florida.
Golf Odds and Predictions: Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open
by Alan Matthews - 10/3/2012
Before I preview this week’s PGA Tour Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, which has to be the longest tournament name in pro sports history, let’s look back at a very successful Ryder Cup if you followed my advice. Needless to say, the United States should have beaten Europe, leading 10-4 at one point late Saturday and 10-6 entering Sunday’s final singles. But the Europeans staged the biggest comeback in the event’s history – U.S. rallied from a similar deficit in 1999 but that was on home soil – to win 14.5-13.5 and retain the Cup.
The 2012 Ryder Cup Props, Odds and Betting Picks
by Alan Matthews - 9/26/2012
Let me first say that I will be previewing all of the PGA Tour’s Fall Series tournaments and any other relevant big golf tournaments through the winter, but to the casual golf fan and bettor the season ends this weekend with the 39th Ryder Cup. The biennial competition between players from the United States and Europe visits Medinah Country Club outside Chicago for the first time.
The Tour Championship PGA Golf Props Odds and Betting Picks
by Alan Matthews - 9/18/2012
I previewed this weekend’s FedEx Cup-ending Tour Championship last week at Doc’s, going with Phil Mickelson to take the tournament and the $10 million grand prize. Today, let’s look at some various Bovada props on the final big-time event on the PGA Tour for 2012 (Ryder Cup isn’t a Tour event).
PGA Golf Odds and Predictions: The Tour Championship
by Alan Matthews - 9/14/2012
The PGA Tour’s playoffs, the FedEx Cup, wrap up next weekend at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta with the Tour Championship. A cool $10 million grand prize is awarded to the winner of the FedEx Cup, and all 30 players in the field mathematically have a shot at winning the Cup, although, realistically, only a handful do.
PGA Tour Golf Odds and Predictions: BMW Championship
by Alan Matthews - 9/5/2012
Not that Rory McIlroy likely gives a darn about what I think, but I am now squarely back in the McIlroy camp in terms of believing he is the future superstar on the PGA Tour. That seemed obvious after last year’s U.S. Open victory, a win at the Honda Classic back in March and taking over the world No. 1 ranking this spring.
PGA Tour Golf Odds and Predictions: Deutsche Bank Championship
by Alan Matthews - 8/29/2012
The PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup Playoffs have been shaven down from the Top 125 in the points to Top 100 for this week’s second postseason event, the Deutsche Bank Championship at TPC Boston. However, don’t go channel surfing on Thursday morning looking for this tournament. It’s a Friday-Monday event designed to end on Labor Day. The only other scheduled Friday-Monday event on Tour is the season-opening Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Hawaii.
2012 PGA Tour Golf Odds and Predictions: The Barclays
by Alan Matthews - 8/22/2012
Pretty good results in my Wyndham Championship preview last week. I thought Sergio Garcia would contend but was still a bit surprised that he won – I would have jumped all over a Top-10 prop on El Nino but Bovada didn’t offer one. That victory essentially locked up a European Ryder Cup spot for Garcia. I picked Carl Pettersson to finish in the Top 10 (and win) and he finished T4. Also hit on a Top 10 for Jason Dufner and non-Top-10 finishes for Charl Schwartzel and Brandt Snedeker.
PGA Tour Golf Odds and Predictions: Wyndham Championship
by Alan Matthews - 8/15/2012
It’s a bit of a letdown week on the PGA Tour following Rory McIlroy’s dominating performance over the weekend at the PGA Championship that I certainly never saw coming. In fact, this weekend’s Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C., is a lot like Week 17 in the NFL season.
Golf Odds and Predictions: 2012 PGA Championship Preview and Picks
by Alan Matthews - 8/8/2012
The PGA Championship is called “Glory’s Last Shot” because it’s the final major championship of the golf season. And, unfortunately for the tournament, it’s always considered the weak sister of the four. The only time it won’t be overshadowed by the Masters, U.S. Open and British Open is if a golfer is going for the Grand Slam at the PGA. That’s certainly not the case this year with three different winners of the first three majors. In addition, the PGA is overshadowed even more this season because of the Olympics, not to mention the first full slate of NFL Preseason games on Thursday night.
Golf Odds and Predictions: PGA Championship Props Odds and Picks
by Alan Matthews - 8/7/2012
It’s a major championship week in golf, so that means it’s a two-story preview week for the 94th PGA Championship, held for the first time at the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Resort in South Carolina. Let’s take a look at some of the hundreds of prop options at Bovada for the final major of the 2012 season.
