European Tour Picks: DP World Tour Championship Odds and Predictions
by Alan Matthews - 11/12/2013
I will go across the pond this week in my golf column and preview the European Tour's season finale, the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai. It's essentially the Tour Championship of Europe with the Top-60 players competing for the money title, otherwise known as the Race to Dubai. The PGA Tour is pretty watered down this week at the OHL Classic at Mayakoba in Mexico, so it was a no-brainer choice.

As good as Dustin Johnson has been in his PGA Tour career, there's no doubt that winning last week's WGC-HSBC Champions is his best victory so far. It almost turned into one of his worst choke jobs as Johnson led by six shots while teeing off on No. 18 on Saturday, only to drive in the water for a double.

Could this be the year that Ryan Moore goes from promising player to rising star? Moore won the CIMB Classic in Kuala Lumpur last week, beating fellow American Gary Woodland in the first playoff of the 2013-14 season. Moore birdied the first extra hole, which had to be played on Monday morning in Malaysia (Sunday night in the USA). Woodland had a chance to win on the 72nd hole in the near darkness Sunday but just missed a 10-foot birdie putt.

The new wraparound 2013-14 schedule seemed to do what it was supposed to last week at the Shriners Hospital for Children Open in Las Vegas as we had a pretty big-name winner, Webb Simpson. Most likely under the old format of the Fall Series where FedEx Cup points weren't at stake, Simpson wouldn't have been playing.

Jimmy Walker: FedEx Cup Champion and PGA Tour Player of the Year!! OK, I'm obviously kidding, but Walker won the PGA Tour season-opening Frys.com Open last week for his first career title in start No. 188. And this has me worrying we are going to see a ton of first-time winners early in the new season much as we did last year. I’m happy for Walker, who will get to play in the Masters for the first time. Rough finish for journeyman Brooks Koepka, who gagged away a four-shot lead with 11 holes left on Sunday.

The 2013 PGA Tour season wrapped up unofficially last week with yet another American victory in the Presidents Cup, and the shortest offseason in sports history already is complete as well. The Tour's new 2013-14 wraparound season begins this Thursday with the Frys.com Open at CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin, Calif. It's the last time the course will host the event.

It's not an official PGA Tour points event, but this week's Presidents Cup at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio, site of Jack Nicklaus' Memorial Tournament, is essentially the official end of the 2013 season. The new 2013-14 wraparound season begins next week with the Frys.com Open in California (which I will preview as usual).

Look, I get that golfers are independent contractors and thus can play when and if they choose. No one is paying their salaries, other than some sponsorship money, and they are responsible for all expenses to travel, pay the caddie, etc. Still, how can anyone take the four-event FedEx Cup playoff seriously if a player can win the $10 million prize despite missing one of the four tournaments?

I knew Henrik Stenson was due to win a tournament as he kept coming so close, but I unfortunately didn't pick the Swede to take the Deutsche Bank Championship before the PGA Tour took last week off. Stenson finished with a tournament-record 22-under 262 for a two-shot win at TPC Boston to take over the lead in the FedEx Cup standings and for his fifth Top-3 finish in his past six starts.

You know that PGA Tour Player of the Year Award that Tiger Woods seemingly had a hammer-lock on? Not so much anymore. Oh, sure, Woods is probably still the favorite with his Tour-high five victories. But Adam Scott's win last week at The Barclays jumped Scott to a career-high No. 2 in the world -- and No. 2 in the FedEx Cup points behind Woods. Scott also has a major title on his resume this year unlike Woods (he does have two WGC victories).

My two-tournament winning streak on picking correct PGA Tour victors ended on Sunday when some guy named Patrick Reed won the Wyndham Championship for his first Tour win. That was the trend for a long stretch earlier this year where a relative unknown would get his first Tour victory. Well-known players had won the previous four events (not counting the two opposite-field tournaments for the British Open and WGC-Bridgestone).

Yep, I'm feeling pretty good about my golf prognostication right now. For the first time in the nearly two years I've been writing weekly golf columns here at Doc's, I have not only picked my first major winner but also been correct back-to-back weeks. This means I almost assuredly jinxed myself for this week's Wyndham Championship.

I can't exactly pat myself on the back too hard here, but I did predict my second winner of the year -- I'm saying two-and-a-half because of Hunter Mahan's withdrawal at the Canadian Open -- last week at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. It's now pretty clear that Tiger Woods simply feels incredibly comfortable at a handful of courses, maybe none more so than Firestone.

Professional golf’s fourth and final Major of the 2013 season gets underway this week at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York. The first of four rounds starts this Thursday, and to get you ready for all the action Bovada has released a full set of prop bet odds for the event. The following is a look at a few these props that offer the best value when it comes to wagering on the tournament.

I just can't catch a break!! While I applaud Hunter Mahan for being the father of the year by leaving last week's Canadian Open with the 36-hole lead -- thus flushing potentially $1 million down the toilet -- I had picked Mahan to win the tournament. I'm glad he did make it home to see the birth of daughter Zoe. Obviously, there's no way of knowing if Mahan would have held on, especially after eventual winner Brandt Snedeker shot a 63 on Saturday.

It was a very exciting British Open at Muirfield last week where the players still couldn't solve the course despite very unseasonably warm conditions. That played a part in the greens acting more like Augusta than a Scottish links course.

Yet another first-time winner on the PGA Tour last week at the John Deere Classic, although I think it's pretty clear that 19-year-old Jordan Spieth won't be stuck on one career win whenever he retires. This kid is going to be a major force on the Tour barring injury or David Duval syndrome. Spieth beat defending champion Zach Johnson and David Hearn in a playoff to become the first teenage winner on Tour in 82 years.

When you write for a newspaper or magazine, both of which I have done, you have to be impartial on stories. Your job isn't to influence people -- although columnists (to a degree) and op-ed writers are allowed to -- but inform. The nice thing about writing for Doc's Sports is the point is to influence you with good information. I mention this because I am a Phil Mickelson fan.
2013 US Open Picks and PGA Tour Golf Odds
by Alan Matthews - 6/12/2013
Last week's St. Jude Classic in Memphis rather summed up this golf year for me on these recommendations. Yet again, a guy I had barely heard of, Harris English, won his first PGA Tour event. Obviously I didn't predict that. I went with Charles Howell III (33/1), and he finished T39.
Weekly Top Props Odds and Predictions – US Open
by Dave Schwab - 6/11/2013
The US Open is not just golf’s second major of the season; it is the toughest test of the year. The USGA is the governing body of this tournament, and its goal with the setup of the course is to make it a true test of par, which, in turn, makes this a grueling test of golf.
