Bird vs. Magic. Ali vs. Frazier. McGirt vs. Curran. Some of the great sporting rivalries in American history. OK, I'm kidding about that last one, but little-known golfers William McGirt and Jon Curran topped a very strong field at the Memorial Tournament last week. The duo finished at 15 under, and McGirt beat Curran on the second playoff hole to win his first PGA Tour event in his 165th career start.

Four! Yes, I'm aware that when alerting other golfers to a potentially wayward shot that it's spelled fore. But I'm saying "Four!" because I hit on my fourth winner of the 2015-16 golf season on Sunday with Jordan Spieth taking home the Dean & DeLuca Invitational at Colonial in Fort Worth, Spieth's first professional win in his home state.

Apparently I picked Sergio Garcia to win a tournament a week too early. The Spaniard was my choice to win the Players Championship two weeks ago but couldn't manage that. Garcia did take home the AT&T Byron Nelson on Sunday, beating Brooks Koepka in a playoff. Those two finished at 15-under 265. Koepka handed the win to Sergio by driving into the water on that first playoff hole.

With all due respect to Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy, there's little question that right now the world's best golfer is Aussie Jason Day, and that has been the case since right after last year's British Open. Day was brilliant at the Players Championship in going wire-to-wire to win the event, at 15-under 273, for the first time in his career. He was the first wire-to-wire winner at TPC Sawgrass in 16 years, and it was Day's seventh victory overall in the past 17 starts.

I'm not sure what the most unlikely tournament win in PGA Tour history is, but I feel confident saying that James Hahn's victory last week at the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte has to be on the list of among the most unlikely this decade. Was good karma with this guy or what? First off, he entered the tournament having missed eight straight cuts this season. He didn't break 70 in any of those events as you would imagine. His scoring average was 73.4, and he was 30 over par.

Last week's Zurich Classic of New Orleans was a mess weather-wise, forcing not just a Monday finish but also the tournament was shortened to 54 holes (first event shortened since the 2013 opener in Hawaii). And Brian Stuard got his first PGA Tour win by beating Jamie Lovemark on the second playoff hole. Amazingly, Stuard never bogeyed a single hole in the tournament. In addition to making all 40 of his putts inside 10 feet, Stuard led the field at 2.849 in strokes gained/putting.

At last week's Valero Texas Open against a pretty weak field, my choice to win the tournament was Charley Hoffman at a nice Bovada price +3000. My logic was that Hoffman had played every Texas Open since the tournament moved to TPC San Antonio and hadn't finished worse than T13. He was third there in 2013 and second in 2011.

Two weeks ago at Augusta, England's Danny Willett became maybe the best European player most golf fans hadn't heard of to win his first PGA Tour event (and has since joined the PGA Tour). On Sunday at the RBC Heritage on Hilton Head Island, another guy with a great resume on the European Tour, South African Branden Grace, won his first title on the PGA Tour.

It's really hard not to root for Jordan Spieth. Everything you hear and read is that he's a great young guy with his head on his shoulders and not some pompous ass like Tiger Woods often was at the height of his fame. So it was doubly crushing to watch Spieth melt down Sunday on the par-3 155-yard 12th hole at the Masters, the shortest hole at Augusta National. He hit two in the water at that hole -- I can't even explain what happened on the second one from the drop area -- to put up a quadruple-bogey seven. Spieth had taken just eight total shots on No. 12 over the first three rounds.

Just going to be honest with you upfront and say I had barely heard of PGA Tour golfer Jim Herman before he won last week's final tune-up for the Masters, the Houston Open. But from what I've read about the 38-year-old journeyman who used to work for Donald Trump as a PGA professional and teaching pro, I'm happy for him. Herman, ranked 191st in the world at the start of the week, got his first win in his 106th start on the Tour.

Professional golf's first Major of the year tees off this Thursday with first-round action in the 2016 Masters at Augusta National Golf Course. So I think I'm going to place a futures wager on an Australian winning a gold medal at this summer's Rio Olympics. Right now, Aussies own the golf world following Jason Day's win at the WGC-Match Play on Sunday, his second straight PGA Tour victory this season and the fourth in the past five tournaments by an Aussie -- Adam Scott went back-to-back a few weeks ago in Florida.
Jordan Spieth Odds to Win the 2016 Masters with Expert Picks and Predictions
by George Monroy - 3/24/2016
When speaking about the Masters, Jordan Spieth should be the first name on everyone's mind. The young pro captivated the golf world last season, winning consecutive majors and keeping the talk of a calendar year Grand Slam alive and well for a few months. Spieth produced a legendary 2015 by winning both the Masters and US Open to start the year and became only the sixth player in the tour's history, and first since Tiger Woods in 2002, to win both events back to back.

Last week at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Bay Hill, the final event of the Florida Swing, Australian Jason Day shot a final-round 2-under 70 to win by one over Kevin Chappell. Day got up-and-down twice over his final five holes, including on No. 18. From a greenside bunker about 100 yards from the hole, Day blasted out to within four feet and drained the par putt to go wire-to-wire.

Outside of the golf world, Jason Day might be best known for LeBron James crashing into his wife during a Cleveland Cavaliers game a few months ago. Inside the golf world, however, Day has crashed the Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy face-of-golf party and turned it into a three-man race. If the 28-year-old Day can finally have his breakthrough moment in the Masters, after a number of excruciating close calls, the triumvirate of Spieth, McIlroy and Day may be ready to bring the sport back into the mainstream.

I don't follow college golf, so I've never heard of Georgia senior Lee McCoy. But apparently the guy has major game. McCoy was arguably the biggest story at last week's Valspar Championship in the Tampa Bay area. He finished the week at 4-under 280, which was good for sole fourth place and would have meant a nice check of around $292,000. Except of course that would have ended McCoy's amateur career.

I'm not sure what was more newsy last week on the PGA Tour: that Adam Scott won his second straight event or that WGC-Cadillac Championship "host" Donald Trump didn't say upstage the whole tournament at his own resort. The Aussie Scott found himself down by as many as six shots at Trump Doral's Blue Monster on a windy Sunday but beat out Bubba Watson by a shot for his 13th career PGA Tour win -- and Scott made that rally despite two final-round double-bogeys.

Not too long ago, Australian Adam Scott was No. 1 in the world and the brightest rising star in golf. But as seems to happen only in golf, as someone like former No. 1 David Duval can attest, his game left him. It appears Scott is back to form -- even though he can't anchor his putter any longer -- as he won the Honda Classic, the opening of the Florida Swing, on Sunday at PGA National.

Quite a week that Bubba Watson had last week. He passed a kidney stone on Monday (you don't know pain until you do that). Watson made an appearance on the TV show "Girl Meets World." Never heard of it, but cool. He also got to see his 3-year-old son play drums with Justin Bieber as well as take in an excellent Warriors-Clippers game in Los Angeles.

You know how Hall of Famer John Elway ended his NFL career in style by going out on top after winning a second straight Super Bowl with the Denver Broncos? Or how Peyton Manning is likely going to follow the lead of his boss and do the same after winning Super Bowl 50 on Sunday?
