It feels weird to say, but we are about to see the PGA Championship tee off. We're used to this tournament coming at the end of the summer when the season was feeling long and things often somehow felt less urgent. It was, due to the timing, the poor step-brother of the majors. But now it has been moved to May, between the Masters and the U.S. Open, so the majors are now spaced once per month.

I'll just be honest and say I really didn't know anything about Max Homa until he won his first PGA Tour event on Sunday, shooting a final-round 67 to take the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow in Charlotte. I remember his name from a stellar college career at Cal (he won the NCAA title in 2013), but he has since bounced between the Web.com Tour and PGA Tour - he earned his PGA Tour card back for this season in the 2018 Web.com Tour Final.

Really not too much to say about Sunday's Zurich Classic of New Orleans, which was won by the team of Spain's Jon Rahm and American Ryan Palmer. That event is nearly impossible to handicap because of the team format and the fact it's still pretty new.

C.T. Pan's wife probably is still on a shopping spree. She deserves it. Pan won his first PGA Tour event on Sunday at the RBC Heritage on Hilton Head Island, but he originally wasn't even planning to compete. Pan is a former player on the American Junior Golf Association and to give something back to the AJGA was to host the first C.T. Pan Junior Championship in his hometown of Houston last week.

Tiger Woods is someone you either love or hate, and there's really no in between. I'm probably in the latter category simply for how he embarrassed his family and his ex-wife with his serial infidelity. In addition, the guy can be a total pr*ick at times on the course or in interviews. I know, I've met him.

As the calendar turns to April, golf season begins for casual fans. Tournaments have been going on for a long time already, of course, but The Masters marks the first time that a lot of casual fans and bettors really start to pay attention. Majors season has a different feel starting this year with the PGA Championship moved from August to May. The season is more condensed now as a result, with a Major each month from now until July.

Some guys hate match play golf and some thrive on it. Apparently, American Kevin Kisner is the latter. Kisner was runner-up at the 2018 WGC-Match Play in Austin, losing to Bubba Watson. However, he came back and won the tournament on Sunday, beating Matt Kuchar 3 and 2 in the championship match. Kisner lost just seven combined holes to Francesco Molinari in the semifinals and Kuchar in the finals.

Europeans have taken over the PGA Tour for the past three weeks as for the third straight tournament a Euro was the winner. On Sunday, it was Englishman Paul Casey capturing the Valspar Championship in the Tampa Bay area, becoming the first player to ever repeat at the event (Casey had never repeated at any tournament as a pro). He won by a shot over two players in 2018 at 10-under 274 and won by a shot over two different players on Sunday at 8-under 276.

It was a wild final round at the Players Championship on Sunday at TPC Sawgrass with eight different players holding at least a share of the lead at one point. The one left standing was Rory McIlroy, who hit a brilliant, massive drive on the par-5 16th to set up birdie and a two-shot lead. He avoided water on the island hole 17th and would win by a shot over Jim Furyk. A total of 17 balls hit the water on No. 17 on Sunday, the most of any round this year.

Amazing comeback by reigning British Open champion Francesco Molinari on Sunday at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill in Orlando. When the Italian teed off Sunday, he was five shots out of the lead - and starting his round two hours before the last group. Molinari fired a 64, including a brilliant 44-foot birdie putt on No. 18, to finish at 12 under, two shots ahead of Matthew Fitzpatrick.

At one point on the back nine at PGA National Sunday in the Honda Classic, there was a seven-way tie for first between Ryan Palmer, Vijay Singh, Lucas Glover, K.H. Lee, Brooks Koepka and Keith Mitchell. Sorry, but one name doesn't belong among that group: Mitchell. So naturally, he won. Mitchell birdied Nos. 12, 13, 15 and 18, the last one from 15 feet for his first PGA Tour win in his 40th career start.

Well, shoot. I was very tempted to pick Dustin Johnson to win last week's WGC-Mexico Championship, and did recommend him at -110 for a Top 10 and +650 as top American, but I went with the Bovada prop of Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy at +650 vs. the field. Hit on Rory at -105 for a Top 10 and +400 as top European, though.

Interesting Sunday at the Genesis Open as big names like Justin Thomas and Tiger Woods completely faded. J.B. Holmes trailed Thomas by four shots entering the final round - only after both had to play their final 16 holes of the third round Sunday morning. Holmes shot a 1-under 70 in Round 4 and edged out Thomas, who posted 75, by a shot. Thomas three-putted three times on the back-nine in the final round. He finished with 34 putts after not more than 26 in any of the first three rounds.

Well, the U.S. Open in June just got a lot more interesting! Of course, that's the only major to elude Phil Mickelson in his Hall of Fame career. On Monday at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, the same Pebble Beach course that hosts the 2019 U.S. Open, Mickelson finished off a weather-delayed 65, the best final round of anyone in the field, to win that tournament for a record-tying fifth time.

This week, the Tour heads back to California and perhaps the most picturesque course in the United States (it's public, but it's pricey!) for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. What makes this year's event a bit different from past years is that the U.S. Open will be at Pebble later this summer. It will be the sixth time it hosts that major.

World No.1 Justin Rose put a hammerlock on that ranking Sunday at the Farmers Insurance Open as he shot a final-round 3-under 69 to win the tournament by three over Aussie Adam Scott. Rose opened the event with a 63 on the easier North Course and then shot a 66 on the South on Friday and really wasn't ever much threatened.

Unless you cover the PGA Tour for a full-time living, which I used to do but haven't in a decade, then it's simply impossible to know whom every golfer on Tour is. I heard of Tour rookie Adam Long, but I wouldn't have been able to pick him out of a crowd of three at my local grocery store.

That's what I'm talking about! In the first full-field event of the New Year, we correctly recommended Matt Kuchar - at a cool price of +4000 - to win the Sony Open in Hawaii last week. Kuchar led by two after 54 holes and shot a 4-under 66 in the final round for a 22-under 258 overall and beat playing partner Andrew Putnam by four strokes.

Quite the impressive start to the calendar year for 25-year-old American Xander Schauffele. He entered the final round of the Tournament of Champions at Kapalua on Sunday five shots out of the lead but tied a course record with a 62 and beat 54-hole leader Gary Woodland by a shot. The 11-under-par mark was the second-best score to par in a final-round win in PGA Tour history. It was the largest final-round deficit overcome in the history of the Tournament of Champions at Kapalua. Did I mention that Schauffele actually bogeyed his first hole?

The 2018-19 PGA Tour wraparound season actually began in early October in California wine country with the Safeway Open, but to most golf fans the year annually begins at the Tournament of Champions in Hawaii. That tees off Thursday at the Plantation Course at Kapalua, a par 73 measuring 7,518 yards.
