NFL Office Pool Picks Week 3
by Trevor Whenham - 9/17/2013
Last week was a solid week — 11 wins — and would have been better if I had maintained my faith in the Dolphins and Chargers and had given up on the Panthers instead. Lessons learned, and now we can apply them to this week. On the surface this seems like the most straightforward week we have seen yet in our pursuit of Office Pool glory. Here are my straight up picks for the week:

It was a solid first week for me in office pools —12 wins that should have been 13 if someone had told new San Diego coach Mike McCoy that his team has to play for four quarters. Now that we know a little more about what to expect from teams than we did last week, let’s see if we can improve on that with these straight up picks:

It’s time for another NFL season. Finally. That also means that it is the season for office pools. Egos and reputations are on the line as friends and co-workers duel to show who knows more about football and who can pick more winners from week to week. It’s office warfare. To help you claim your rightful place atop the heap at the end of the season, I’m going to help you out by providing a straight up winner for every game played all season.

It seems like this season has gone on forever, and so much that we thought we knew back when it started has changed now. Just think about some of the highlights and lowlights -- the replacement refs, the return of Peyton, the rise of the rookie quarterbacks, the brutal collapse of the Eagles and Chiefs, tragedy following tragedy, Chuckstrong - it goes on and on. Through it all we’ve managed to pick more winners than losers, and that’s really the point of it all. In hopes of finishing on a strong note despite facing a tough week where it’s so hard to know what to expect from too many teams with no pressing need to win, here are the straight up picks for the last 16 games of the 2012 NFL regular season:

As we head into the second last week of the NFL season, it is the stretch drive of the office pools season. If you’ve had a good year then it’s time to buckle down and win your pool. If things haven’t gone so well then you can win a week or two to ease your frustrations and make a few bucks. Here’s how I see the games playing out this week:

It was another strange week in the NFL last week. Last-second heroics, emotion, injuries and general chaos led to some unexpected results. The week ahead looks to have a few confusing ones as well, but that won’t stop me from picking straight up winners for every game this week:

Last week’s action was ugly. There’s no other way to put it, and that’s all I’m going to say about that. When a week doesn’t turn out as you hope, you can sit around and mope or you can just do much better the next week. Let’s choose the latter, shall we?

Last week was Thanksgiving. I’m thankful that the picks have been relatively straightforward the last few weeks. Looking at this week, though, it seems like there could be much less to be thankful for. Compared to the last three weeks, this is a very tough week. Nothing is too tough for us, though, so let’s pick some straight up winners:

I’m coming off my best weekend of the year so far — enough to win some cash from most office pools. Now, in the first week in far too long that we don’t have to deal with a bye week. We also get to enjoy the best single day of the NFL season — a triple-header plus more turkey and fixings than any human being would need to consume to survive for a month. What could be better? I’ll tell you one thing better — all that plus winning some more cash. Let’s find us some straight up winners for our office pools:

It’s the last week of the NFL season in which teams will have bye weeks. That means that starting next week there are 16 games on the schedule, and you have to work harder to win your office pools. Before then, though, let’s enjoy the lighter schedule and win ourselves another week. Here’s how the 14 games on the schedule break down in our attempt to pick straight up winners:

Last week was a reasonably straightforward week for office pool players — largely because favorites took care of business like they were supposed to. If you picked a lot of them you did fine. This week we’ll be relying on something a little different — road teams. Of the 14 matchups this week I expect at least six to be won by the visitors. If that does indeed materialize then it will be a very good week. Without further ado, here’s a look at all 14 games with winners picked straight up:

We have made it to Week 9 — the halfway point of this NFL season. It has been a long, strange trip already, and the twists and turns are only starting. Thankfully, this week seems fairly straightforward — at least on paper. Of course, that probably means that we are in for all sorts of trouble as we try to pick all of the straight up winners to dominate our NFL office pools:

Last week basically made sense in the NFL. There were a few surprises, but for the most part the teams that won were supposed to win, and vice versa. That’s good news when we try to win office pools. The bad news, though, is that in this topsy-turvy season it seems like every time we think things are making perfect sense we have a week in which nothing makes sense. Let’s hope that this coming week isn’t one of those:

This is the first week that we have seen six teams on their bye week, so our NFL office pool picks feature only 13 games. It’s probably good that there are fewer games than we have seen before. After last week that means there are fewer games to confuse and frustrate us. There were certainly more than enough of those last week. Let’s just pretend that a week that featured eight underdog winners never happened and start fresh this week:

Last week was a very good week for our selections. I went 12-2, so it was a very nice week. Now, let’s do it again this coming week, and help find a whole bunch more straight up winners for your office pool. With Carolina, Chicago, Jacksonville, and New Orleans on the sidelines with byes, there are again 14 games to deal with.

I feel like the Chargers are out to get me. They make it all but impossible for me to predict them. Two weeks ago I expected them to be strong and they were terrible. Last week I picked against them and they were dominant. They just make my head hurt. So, for that matter, do the Lions, who can’t seem to get their act together and are wasting talent like crazy. If it weren’t for those teams it would have been a pretty good week last week. Detroit is mercifully off this week, so I only have to deal with one nemesis as I make my straight up NFL office pool picks to help guide you to success:

Every season there are inevitably a couple of weeks that you just want to forget about. They were so incredibly bad, and so utterly unlike you expected them to be, that you wish you had never gotten out of bed on Sunday morning. This was one of those weeks. I didn’t realize that Christian Ponder and Jake Locker would suddenly look like Elway and Marino.

The early games were rough this week, but things got better as the day went along. I didn’t pick the Cardinals over the Patriots, but frankly I would have questioned my own sanity if I had — regardless of how the game actually turned out. This week’s NFL office pool picks — remember, they are all straight up, not against the spread — seem pretty straightforward for the most part. We’ve hit double-digits the first two weeks of the season, so there is no issues there. Now we just need to take the next step forward and win ourselves some weekly money:

Picking winners in the first week of the season is tough. We have little meaningful current information about what teams are capable of, so we are forced to guess far more than is ideal. Because of that, I consider the opening week a success if I reach double-digit wins. There’s a checkmark beside that goal this year, so I’m a happy guy — and we’ll only get better going forward. Here’s how this week shakes out. Remember, these picks are all straight up, not against the spread:

The NFL season is finally here. For a lot of people that means that it is time to fight for bragging rights in a weekly office pool. Few things are more satisfying than picking more winners than your colleagues and stuffing their cash in your pockets — no matter how much money it is. To help in the pursuit of that goal we’re going to pick a winner and provide a little analysis for each game all year. These winners will be straight up, not against the spread. Without further ado:
