NFL Office Pool Picks Week 5
by Trevor Whenham - 9/30/2014
I am man enough to admit that I have been mostly clueless about the NFL this year. It isn’t through a lack of effort. It just seems like every time I figure that I have a team figured out they pull a 180. I’m not alone in this -- scores have been lopsided, and sportsbooks have certainly not hated September. All you can do in a case like this -- a season with two completely forgettable weeks worth of picks in the books already -- is just work harder next time out.

After a completely haywire week of games two weeks ago, last week’s action made a whole lot more sense. Now we are entering into a new phase of the season - -six teams enjoy their bye week this week, so there are only 13 games to pick. That can be good news for our office pools, though it does mean that there is less margin for error. Here’s how I see this week’s slimmer roster of games playing out:

Once or twice a season in the NFL there is a week that, as a handicapper, you just want to forget about. Week 2 was absolutely one of those weeks for me. Ouch. Double ouch. A lot of what happened didn’t make a lot of sense, and even some of the less-surprising results weren’t ultimately the ones I predicted. You have to have a short memory in this game, though, so instead of dwelling on a series of wrong picks we’ll brush ourselves off get back at it again:

The first week of the NFL had its share of stunning moments. Who saw the Patriots getting manhandled in a divisional game? Or the Bills winning on the road — or anywhere, for that matter? The Chiefs should have been better at home. And who would have seen the Vikings as 28-point winners?

We are finally — FINALLY — at the start of the NFL season. That means different things to different people. One of the biggest things to me is that I have another chance to win the office pool. Another shot at bragging rights. Another chance to gloat mercilessly. Another chance to get lucky and pretend it is all skill. It’s what the NFL is all about.
NFL Office Pool Picks Week 17

We have made it — the last weekend of the NFL season and the last weekend for office pools everywhere. I don’t know about you, but I’m kind of looking forward to the end. This has been a haywire season — harder than normal to get a sense of. Time for what should be a wide-open and exciting playoff run. Without further ado, the last straight up office pools picks of the year:
NFL Office Pool Picks Week 16

We’re in the home stretch of the NFL season. Just two more weeks remaining. There will be a lot of garbage games next week, but there is actually a lot to like this week — and far less need to close our eyes and gamble as there was last week. Here’s how the 16 games set up for our office pools this week:

Every week we offer free NFL office pool picks to help you win your office pool. As always, all of our free picks are without the point spread, and these will be posted on Doc’s Sports homepage every Tuesday during the NFL regular season. The following are this week’s office pool picks:

We’re heading into the home stretch — week 14 of 17 on the year. This is when office pools are won or lost. Some teams are desperate for wins and are playing at full intensity. Others are dreaming of the offseason’s merciful arrival. The trick is to know which is which. Here’s how I see this week playing out for you office pool players:

This is the definition of parity. We are at the point in this season where pretty much no result we see can really surprise us anymore. Bucs over the Lions? Sure. Chargers winning in Kansas City? Why not. Cards crushing the Colts? Broncos taking the second half off? I can’t be surprised anymore.

There were not many major surprises last week in the NFL. Only the Steelers over the Lions qualifies as a reasonably big one in my eyes, and the odds don’t really suggest it was much of an upset at all. Again this week we have a reasonably straightforward looking week -- at least from where we sit now. Here’s how I see the week playing out for office pools:

There is absolutely nothing good to say about last week’s office pool picks. The Rams?!?!?! The Jaguars?!?!? Ugh. Forget and move on. Here’s how I see the 15 games on the schedule playing out this week for straight up picks for NFL office pools:
NFL Office Pool Picks Week 10

Two weeks ago things mostly made a lot of sense in the NFL. Last week wasn’t quite as straightforward. The very good Saints getting solidly beaten by the Jets? Didn’t have that. Nick Foles with seven touchdown passes? Nope. Seattle needing overtime at home against the Bucs? That was just strange. Miami getting past the Bengals?

Last week in the NFL was what was needed for office pool players — a week that mostly went as expected. Some may not have had the Giants winning two in a row or the Cowboys being that determined to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, but most of the games turned out as they were reasonably expected to. You can never really tell in advance, but this week’s games also look as if they are more straightforward than the league is capable of being at times. Here’s my straight up picks for all 13 games on tap for this week:

Another week, another set of straight up office pool picks. I don’t even want to talk about last week because there were too many strange things for my taste — or at least for the health of my picks. It’s a whole new week, though, and I like how this card sets up. Following are my straight up picks for Week 8 NFL office pools.
NFL Office Pool Picks Week 7
by Trevor Whenham - 10/14/2013
Last week was a strange week — mostly predictable, but with a couple of real head scratchers. In other words, it was just another week in the NFL. This week promises more of the same. It’s weeks like these — not stunningly difficult but far from easy — that separate the office pool pretenders from the contenders. Here’s how the week plays out:

Last week’s games weren’t perfect for me and the health of my office pools — far from it, in fact. These things happen, though, and it certainly could have been worse. This week is somewhat clearer, and things will be much better. Here is the way this week’s games break down, and the straight up picks for each contest:
NFL Survivor Pool Picks and Advice: Week 5
by Matt Severance - 10/2/2013
What's the biggest upset of the year? The Titans winning at Pittsburgh in Week 1? Now we know how awful the Steelers really are. How about Cleveland winning at Minnesota in Week 3? Or Indianapolis surprising the 49ers in San Francisco? I don't think those qualify as huge upsets. I don't think this will be the week where we see another large upset, either.

Early in the late afternoon slate of games on Sunday, I was pretty sure I was in trouble. In a sign of how things can and do change, though, by the time games were settled things had turned out pretty well. Sometimes you just need to be lucky and patient, I guess. The nice thing about last weekend is that I don’t really regret the ones I got wrong, either — always a good sign.

There are many weeks during the course of the NFL season in which you feel like you know what is going on. You had suspicions about how games would turn out, you made the picks in your office pool, and you were right far more than you were wrong. This past week was absolutely not one of those weeks. Ouch. I didn’t see Cleveland waking from the dead. Or the Giants being that bad. Or the Ravens laying a major beatdown on the Texans. Or the 49ers forgetting how to play football.
