With all due respect to the 32 teams playing this weekend, there are only three games I am excited to watch and that actually mean anything in terms of the playoff race. Because of that, this year's Week 17 is one of the dullest in recent memory, and it's going to take something miraculous to happen for it to even be considered anything other than the worst week of the football season. As always, I will be giving you my confidence picks for this week.

Spygate 2.0 is upon us, and I'm not sure I can stomach another month talking about the Patriots and their cheating ways. I mean, come on. How many times are the Patriots going to try and cheat to get a leg up on the competition as if they haven't already won a million Super Bowls this decade. To make matters worse, they were caught allegedly spying on the Cincinnati Bengals.

There are just four weeks left in the NFL season, and the playoff picture is starting to take shape. In the AFC, the Patriots and Ravens are all but locks to finish as the first and second seed (order TBD) and lock up the coveted bye week. The AFC South and AFC West still have plenty to play for, including the division title, while only one of the two wild-card spots appear to be up for grabs since Buffalo is 9-3 and two games up on the second wild-card spot.

Now, can anyone tell me why we are still being subjected to watching the Detroit Lions play in the first game on Thanksgiving? The Lions haven't been good for like a decade, and yet the NFL continues to trot them out and make us suffer through terrible football for the first part of our Thursday. How about scheduling some good teams to kick off Thanksgiving? I'm sure the ratings would be even better if we got to see the likes of Patrick Mahomes or Lamar Jackson or Aaron Rodgers or an upstart team like the 49ers or hell, what about Baker Mayfield?

After this weekend's action, teams will have played three-quarters of their season, and I simply cannot believe that's the case. It feels like just yesterday we were getting ready for Week 1 only to have the Thursday night game (GB 10 - CHI 3) set the tone for what was a rather big dud of a weekend. Because of that game, we've turned away from the point spread and focused more on confidence pools success.

Seven underdogs won straight up last week, and I saw a stat that said if you were to bet $100 on those seven teams in a parlay, you'd get back nearly $200,000. On Thursday you have the Chargers versus the Raiders in an AFC West showdown, while Sunday night gives us the 6-3 Vikings vs. the 5-3 Cowboys and perhaps the game of the year goes down on Monday night with the 7-2 Seattle Seahawks taking on the 8-0 San Francisco 49ers.

The concept of just picking a team to win straight up is much more appealing to the average bettor who is still understanding how the point spread part of the equation works. There have been many instances where we wished we had taken a team straight up instead of on the spread, only to have them not cover by half a point.

It was a wacky Week 4 in the National Football League as we saw eight underdogs win outright last week, and, shockingly, only four home teams emerged victoriously. Bettors who keyed in favorites on teasers got killed. And for the most part, "over" bettors also took it square on the chin. Based on the Week 5 NFL spreads, I wouldn't be shocked if the underdogs had another great week - which doesn't bode well for confidence pool players.

Without getting into too much of a detailed recap, last week provided us with some head-scratching results. Teams like the Saints, Giants and Panthers all won their games straight up, despite being +4.5, +6.5 and +2.5, respectively. These three teams were starting backup quarterbacks whether it be through injury or a benching. And they still went on the road and won football games. Football is a funny sport, and it wouldn't surprise me to see all three teams follow up their high point by falling flat on their faces this week against their opponents.
