For Week 15, we had our best week, record-wise, going 13-3, and our second-highest point total of 113 points. It would have been even higher, but the 1-loss Carolina Panthers drove 90 yards on a 7:35 drive and kicked the game-winning field on the last second. Nevertheless, 13-3 is good, even better when you start trying to account for all the injuries.

One of the biggest challenges in handicapping the NFL at the end of the season is correctly judging a team's mental fortitude and how to factor that into our analysis. In a perfect world, these professionals would go out every week and give 100 percent and let talent and a little bit of luck decide everything. However, as we all know, we live in a "far from perfect" betting universe. Some teams with disappointing records have clearly checked out and are simply biding time for next season.

One factor making this season slightly challenging to handicap is the rash of injuries at the quarterback position. So far this season, the number of starting QBs who have missed games due to injuries has risen 30 percent over the 2021 and 2022 seasons. Through Week 13, there have been 53 different QBs to start at least one game. The NFL is on pace for an all-time high of 73 QBs to start a game. After Jacksonville's Trevor Lawerence injured his ankle in Monday night's overtime loss to Cincinnati, neither team had their franchise quarterback under center (Bengals' QB Joe Burrow injured his wrist two weeks before against Baltimore).

Welcome to Doc's Sports NFL Confidence Pool Picks, where we analyze the slate of NFL games each week and give you both the selections to make and the corresponding "confidence value" to go along with the pick. The only bad thing about having three games on Thursday was it reduced Sunday's schedule by two. Subtract another game from Sunday because of the "Black Friday" experiment and the standard Monday night game, and you're left with only 11 games on Sunday, which just seemed light.

I always found it interesting how holidays usually are associated with sports. The 4th of July is baseball, and Christmas Day has become tied to basketball. Nothing screams "Happy Thanksgiving" more than watching the Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys play on Thanksgiving Day. Whether it's before your family feast or after, even families that don't follow professional sports are likely to have one of those two games on their TV.

With each team officially past the halfway mark of their season, the only thing we can be sure of is that it will be one helluva finish. The battle raging in the AFC North might be the most interesting divisional fight in recent memory. While having only one loss separating all four teams is nothing new, the fact that they all have winning records is quite impressive. In the last 20 years, we've seen divisions have three teams with a winning record and the last-place team with a .500 mark, but not with all four having more wins than losses. While there is still a lot of season left, this is one of the exciting storylines to be played out.

It was an eventful Week 9, with the Super Bowl contenders separating themselves from the pretenders. The Ravens have proven they are here to stay at the top of the AFC, with a blowout victory over the NFC West leading Seattle Seahawks. In what was pegged to be a classic matchup between the Eagles and the Cowboys, Philadelphia outworked Dallas in the trenches to extend their lead atop the NFC. Finally, on Sunday night the Bills and Bengals squared off for the first time since the infamous Damar Hamlin game, with the Bengals ousting their longtime foe 24-18 to put their 4th straight win on the board.

In the NFC, the Philadelphia Eagles almost duplicated the start of their 2022 season but could only make it to the sixth game this season instead of the ninth before suffering their first loss. Minnesota and Detroit have flip-flopped first and second in the NFC North, and San Francisco and Seattle are again first and second in the NFC West.

And then there were none. Hours after the second-to-last unbeaten team, the San Francisco 49ers, fell on the road to Cleveland, the last undefeated team, the Philadelphia Eagles, also lost to the New York Jets. With that combo of losses also went my top two selections for the week: San Francisco was 15, and Philadelphia was 14.

San Francisco continues to be the only dominant team in every NFL game. That is usually the case, though, when you have the 2nd highest-scoring offense and the best-scoring defense in the league. They just held Dallas's offense, averaging 360 yards a game, to 197 total yards and 10 points. One interesting aspect of their dominance is that an offense averaging 33.4 ppg is being led by QB Brock Purdy, "Mr. Irrelevance" from the 2022 draft.

In the blink of an eye, we have now entered the realm of "bye weeks" and only have 14 games this week, which reduces the total possible from 136 points to 105. The four teams with byes this week are Cleveland, LA Chargers, Seattle, and Tampa Bay.

"Any Given Sunday"...besides being a great movie, it is the phrase that is used quite often to describe the unpredictable action of an NFL weekend. That phrase is the perfect description of what took place this past Sunday for our Week 3 NFL Confidence Picks. Our 16, 15, and 13-point picks all went up in flames. To put this in perspective, one 11.5-point and two 7.5-point underdogs went down in defeat. Had you made a moneyline parlay of those three games, your $10 wager would have brought back approximately $539.35. Even though we had the big point losses, our picks still went 10-6 for 79 total points.

After a turbulent opening in Week 1 of the 2023 NFL season, "order" was restored as favorites went 10-6 SU. Clearly, my selection skills were a little rusty the first week, as I rebounded with a 12-4 mark and a total of 119 points out of a possible 136.

What a crazy way to start the 2023 NFL season! We started and ended the week with upsets. In between those bookends, six other dogs won outright. If you're counting, favorites went 8-8 SU. Anytime almost half the league is upset, it proves for an exciting week. Sadly, the biggest preseason move of Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets ended quickly on a potentially career-ending injury on just the Jets' fourth play from scrimmage.
