Washington has won more games in the beginning of the year than most people predicted, but I don’t like their chances in this matchup. Patrick Corbin is scheduled to start for the Nationals, and he has allowed 4 runs or more in five of the six starts he has made this year. The Blue Jays lineup is loaded with right-handed bats who can hit bombs, and I think they will do some damage against the soft throwing lefty Corbin. Yusei Kikuchi will take the ball for Toronto and he has been locked in, allowing more than 2 earned runs just one time over his last five starts. They have been good at home, though, and they have beaten up on the weak sisters that they have faced this year, like their sweep of Oakland. Tanner Bibee should be getting the ball in this one, and he’s been excellent, posting a 1.56 ERA in his last three starts. The Angels haven’t been getting anyone out (again), posting a team ERA over 5.00. Cleveland should beat them up some more here. The Detroit Tigers started off this season struggling offensively, but they've turned things around in a big way over the past two weeks ranking in the top ten in MLB in wRC, runs scored and team OPS during that time. They will go up here against New York starter Marcus Stroman in this series opener. Stroman got off to a great start in 2024 but he has since struggled, posting an ugly 5.97 ERA to go along with a 1.79 WHIP in his last four starts overall. Even more alarming is the fact three of those four starts came against teams ranked in the bottom 7 teams in baseball in runs scored currently this season. Detroit counters here with starter Reese Olson in this one. Olson has quietly flown under the radar since the start of his rookie campaign in 2023, posting a very solid 3.82 ERA overall to go along with a strong 1.16 WHIP as well. New York now ranks ninth in the MLB in terms of offensive runs produced per game, averaging 4.9. In terms of defense, New York's pitching has been stout. New York ranks 4th in the MLB across runs produced per game against, allowing just an average of 3.6 runs per game. New York is 8-5 at home, and it looks like this team is in the midst of a massive surge. Detroit is presently 20th in the MLB on the offensive side of runs, averaging just 4 runs per game, followed by 23rd in the league in hits. New York is a much stronger team, and they are finally piecing the puzzle together. I anticipate New York rolling over Detroit in this contest.
