The Miami Marlins are one of the biggest surprises in baseball this season. Though they still have a negative run differential, despite having the franchise’s second-best record to this point, this is a club that thrives in winning close games (18-5 in one-run outcomes) and is clutch in getting big hits along with a shutdown bullpen. After a surprising 20-8 start, Pittsburgh, other than for a few days here and there, has trended downward and is below .500. A closer look finds all aspects have not come through, which includes both hitting and pitching. The Pirates Luis Ortiz (1-3, 4.30 ERA) has not been awful, but opposing teams are batting .298 against him, which is too high to contain opponents. The Marlins Jesus Luzardo (6-5, 4.09) has a similar ERA to Ortiz, but his ERA is two runs lower at home compared to on the road, and he’ll contain the Bucs to give Miami a chance for the victory. That’s now nine of 12 wins in this space and I am 54-31 (64%) with my free newsletter plays over the last 85 weeks. I’m going to have a limited summer soccer release over the next month, focusing primarily on the Gold Cup. That’s where I’m going with this free play. I think that the United States is in a clear letdown spot here. They beat Mexico and Canada – resoundingly – last weekend to claim the Nations League championship. Now they have to shift gears. They are also fielding their ‘B’ team for this tournament, which will be played without most of their star players. The US is going to be overvalued by the sportsbooks because of A) their recent success and B) the general public will want to back their home country. The value will be betting against this side in this tournament. They are starting their top defense, so I would also like the ‘under’ in this match, and I can see a 1-1 draw. These two teams are favored to advance out of this group, so I think there won’t be a lot of aggressiveness or desperation from either side. Jamaica has been ice cold over the past year (their last outright win was June 7, 2022), but they will be sky high for this one and I think they can get a point. Take #349 Michigan (+3) over Pittsburgh (8 p.m., Saturday, June 24)

Both of these teams are flawed and should not be in the USFL Playoffs, yet one will reach the championship game next week. We will grab the points with Michigan, as Pittsburgh does not deserve to be favored against any team in the league. Pittsburgh won the first two games in low scoring fashion, and this will likely be a tough offensive game to watch as well.
