Take Notre Dame (-20.5) over Navy (2:30 p.m., Saturday, August 26)

This will be the third meeting between the Navy vs. Notre Dame in Ireland. They will play in the same exact same stadium they did in 2012. Navy let go of head coach Ken Niumatalolo. The program seemed to have lost its edge with four losing seasons out of five. Enter defensive coordinator Brian Newberry, who understands the culture of the school. Newberry will look to have the Midshipmen sell out to stop the run, coming off a year where they were third nationally in doing so. Most of the top talent in the D-Line returns to generate havoc. However, against a mature and skillful passer, the Navy could give up big plays down the field. Offensively, the Middies will still run the option, with offensive coordinator Grant Chesnut. However, Newberry wants more passing built in, and that can be easier said than done in finding the right guy and developing pass catchers. Despite the success the Notre Dame football program has enjoyed since 2017, this is the first time they have a quarterback that is really skilled at throwing the ball. Sam Hartman holds virtually all the pass records at Wake Forest. Hartman will work behind a strong offensive line that will only improve as the season wears on, and there is always a bevy of good running backs with different skills. Defensively, the stop troops up front must be reworked, and head coach Marcus Freeman should help there. The linebackers are excellent against the run and fill gaps. The secondary features cornerback Benjamin Morrison. The other spots have talent that will have to develop. The Navy’s run defense might present some early issues for the Irish. Nonetheless, Notre Dame’s passing offense should lead to big plays, where they can build a lead that could force the Middies to have to throw. Make it the Fighting Irish by 24. That is now 15 of 18 wins in this space, and I am 60-31 (66%) with my free newsletter plays over the last 90 weeks. Let’s keep it rolling! You know, last year I opened the season with a top play on UTEP against North Texas. They had everything lined up: a veteran team, a lot of excitement around the program, a revenge angle, and a boisterous home crowd. It didn’t work out, as they fell apart in the second half in a 31-13 loss. Here is their chance to make it up to me! Dana Dimel has built his program slowly and methodically. And with Conference USA losing a lot of its top teams, they could be a player in the conference race. They can’t lose games like this, though. Jacksonville State is making the leap up to the FBS level. They are going to be all kinds of amped up for their first home game against an FBS team and their CUSA opener. That energy – like UTEP found out last year – can wear off and lead to a letdown in the game. JSU has lost its season opener four of the last five years, with the lone win coming last year over Stephen F. Austin. Over the last three years, the Gamecocks have faced three other FBS teams. It hasn’t gone well, losing 54-17 to Tulsa last year, 31-0 to UAB in 2021 and 41-24 at Florida State in 2020. Rich Rodriguez will have this team ready to compete in its first year against the big boys. That doesn’t mean that they should be expected to just step right in and start winning games, though. Rich Rod has a bit of a quarterback controversy at the moment and may play two signal-callers in this first game. UTEP doesn’t have any of those issues. They have a veteran, four-year starter under a center, their top wideout back, and one of CUSA’s top offensive lines. Throw in seven veteran starters on defense, and these guys are better equipped to start the season on the front foot. The young Detroit offense hasn't been good this season, but it's finally starting to see some growth as their team OPS is more than 70 points higher in the month of August than compared to their full season team stats. Houston is expected to counter here with rookie starter Hunter Brown. Free College Football Prediction From Arun Shiva:

Take Louisiana Tech (-11) over Florida International (9 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 26)

Grayson James threw for almost 2,000 yards passing and threw 11 touchdowns, but also 11 interceptions, for FIU last season. Will he protect the ball more this year is the question. FIU saw WR Tyrese Chambers leave for Maryland and TE Rivaldo Fairweather left to go to Auburn. Kris Mitchell and Dean Patterson can make plays at wide receiver, but it's no secret that FIU lost some talent. Hank Bachmeier has some weapons on the outside this season with Smoke Harris and Cyrus Allen, an offensive line with experience, and a good running game. This line opened at 9.5 back in May and has been steamed up to 11, and we agree with the move as the Bulldogs likely do well and come out firing. Let's roll with Louisiana Tech on Saturday. Take Indianapolis Colts ‘Under’ 6.5 Wins (-105)

I posted this play in this space last week. I’m re-posting it because I absolutely love this pick, especially now that the Colts have announced that Anthony Richardson will be the starter. That is a colossal mistake – which I documented in an article HERE – and they are in for an ugly season. It has been 21 years since the NFL adopted its current 32-team, eight-division format. In that time there have been 45 teams that have won three or fewer games in a season. There have been 98 teams over that period – an average of 4.7 per season – that have won four or fewer games each year. Now, these numbers are compromised a bit by the fact that the league now plays a 17-game schedule. However, the last quarter century of football history suggests that two teams are going to end this season with three wins or less and four or five of them are going to win four games. Let’s bump both of those up and say that two teams will win four or less and five of them are going to win five or fewer games. Now you have to ask yourself: are the Colts one of the five worst teams in the NFL? There is not a doubt in my mind. The defense isn’t nearly strong enough to carry the load and I think that this team is going to be involved in a lot of shootouts. Their best running back, Jon Taylor, is angry and won’t play well this season. Their receivers stink. They have a first-year head coach and we have no idea if he is going to be any good. These guys are just bad. The Colts haven’t won fewer than five games in back-to-back seasons since 1997-98. However, that was a transition period from Lindy Infante and Jim Harbaugh to Jim Mora and Peyton Manning. This is another transition year and things will get uglier before they get better.
