I posted this play in this space three weeks ago. I’m re-posting it because I absolutely love this pick, especially now that the Colts have announced that Anthony Richardson will be the starter. That is a colossal mistake – which I documented in an article HERE – and they are in for an ugly season. It has been 21 years since the NFL adopted its current 32-team, eight-division format. In that time, there have been 45 teams that have won three or fewer games in a season. There have been 98 teams over that period – an average of 4.7 per season – that have won four or fewer games each year. Now, these numbers are compromised a bit by the fact that the league now plays a 17-game schedule. However, the last quarter century of football history suggests that two teams are going to end this season with three wins or less and four or five of them are going to win four games. Let’s bump both of those up and say that two teams will win four or less and five of them are going to win five or fewer games. Now you have to ask yourself: are the Colts one of the five worst teams in the NFL? There is not a doubt in my mind. The defense isn’t nearly strong enough to carry the load, and I think that this team is going to be involved in a lot of shootouts. Their best running back, Jon Taylor, is angry and won’t play well this season. Their receivers stink. They have a first-year head coach and we have no idea if he is going to be any good. These guys are just bad. The Colts haven’t won fewer than five games in back-to-back seasons since 1997-98. However, that was a transition period from Lindy Infante and Jim Harbaugh to Jim Mora and Peyton Manning. This is another transition year and things will get uglier before they get better. Iowa OC Brian Ferentz is operating under a 25-point must-do list to maintain his employment under his dad, Hawkeyes' HC Kirk Ferentz. Week-1 did not provide a ton of confidence. After scoring 14 points in the opening quarter, Iowa was held to 10 points the rest of the game by a Utah State team in complete rebuilding mode. Iowa gained just 284 total yards on 3.94 yards per play. Iowa State wasn't much better, scoring just 23 offensive points in a 30-9 win over Northern Iowa. The Cyclones were outgained and totaled just 250 yards. ISU finished with just 45 offensive plays to 72 for the Panthers. I expect a low, sluggish game in Ames this week. Never overreact to what you saw last week, and OU blew the doors off Arkansas St and scored 73 points. Not so fast, as I have Arkansas State as the 3rd worst power ranked team in FBS. SMU is a much stiffer test for the Sooners this week, and I have them power rated (+12) in my ratings for this matchup which provides a 4.5-point overlay against the spread and OU will have their hands full. While everyone knows Dillion Gabriel, the QB for OU, the best QB in this game in fact is SMU's Preston Stone. I think he in fact may out stat and outplay OU's Gabriel in this one. SMU ran it for over 200 yards last week and threw it for 250 in a solid win, and that is what you call a balanced attack. I expect the Mustangs to compete with the Sooners in this game and make it very interesting Saturday Night in Norman. The Falcons are strong this season and expected to be a player in the Mountain West, but they have a conference game on deck (Friday) and I believe this one will go down to the wire. That is now 16 of 20 wins in this space, and I am 61-32 (66%) with my free newsletter plays over the last 93 weeks. Let’s keep it rolling! For weeks – even before Joe Burrow injured his calf – I had a sneaking suspicion that the Browns were going to pull the upset and win this game. Over the last 12 years, Week 1 divisional home underdogs have gone 15-2 ATS, covering the number in seven straight. These division home dogs are also 61-39 ATS in the last 100 instances in Week 1. Also, the Browns have had Burrow’s number. He has never beaten them in Cleveland and is just 1-4 SU against them. I think Burrow’s leg is fine. And he is going to have another dominating year. However, I bet against him in Week 1 last year after he missed the preseason because of an appendectomy and I remember how rusty and ugly he was while throwing four interceptions in a loss to the Steelers. Jim Schwarz is going to be ultra-aggressive with this new-look Browns defense, and I think that can pay dividends right away. Also, Cincinnati has completely retooled its secondary, and I think it might take those guys a minute to click. Cleveland can control this game with a dominating offensive line and running game. That will set up the play-action and that could really pierce a back end that has three new starters, including both starting safeties. The Bengals are getting the majority of the action in this game – including over three-fourths of the money – but I am going to go against the public in this one. Both these teams were 7-10 last year and Carolina went a different direction as far as coaching and brought in Frank Reich to have him not only change the fortunes of the Panthers franchise but develop the No. 1 pick Bryce Young. Generally, Atlanta is considered further along under 3rd-year coach Arthur Smith, and Falcons fans along with ownership are looking for a winning record this season to show progress is headed in the right direction.
