Take Colorado State over St. Mary’s (6:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 9)

There was an assumption that it would be business as usual for St. Mary’s and they would be headed for another 25 or more wins season. The Gaels as of Tuesday sit at 3-5 on the season, and the problems are varied. St. Mary’s is shooting less than 43% from the field and below 30% from behind the arc. Normally, the Gaels are close to 50 and 40 percent, respectively, in those shooting categories, which helps offset their lack of quickness on defense. Colorado State is #13 in the latest polls at 8-0 (7-1 ATS) and has wins over Creighton, Washington and Colorado. The Rams are extremely efficient on offense, averaging better than 85 PPG and shooting over 52%.  The key is their ball movement, going side to side to find open shooters and when the opposing team tries to overplay them, they have a cutter to the basket for a layup. St. Mary’s will try to slow CSU, but that won’t work at Fort Collins, and the Rams roll on the CBS Sports Network. Take Denver (+2.5) over L.A. Chargers (4 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 10)

Los Angeles just ended a three-game losing streak by thumping New England 6-0 on Sunday. Los Angeles is currently ranked 15th in overall offense in the NFL, averaging only 350 yards per game. Los Angeles is also struggling substantially in the run game, averaging less than 100 yards per game. Denver is currently rated 12th in the NFL in terms of rushing offense, averaging 115 yards per game. Denver is not the same Broncos club we saw earlier in the season. The Denver Broncos ended a five-game winning streak with a game-ending loss in Houston on Sunday. With Russell Wilson at the helm, Denver is playing extremely well. Denver isn't there statistically, but look back at their last six games. Green Bay, Kansas City, Buffalo, Minnesota, and Cleveland were all defeated by Denver. All these teams are top tier in the NFL, and Denver won each of these five games. On Sunday, Denver was 15 yards away from defeating Houston. Los Angeles just scored six points against possibly the worst team in the NFL. This Sunday, I anticipate Denver getting back on track. Take St. John’s (-6) over Boston College (4:30 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 10)

That is now 24 of 33 wins in this space (73%) and I am 69-37 (65%) with my free newsletter plays over the last 106 weeks. It was always going to take a bit for Rick Pitino to get the Red Storm on the same page. I think they are getting there. They have now won three straight games. That includes a solid win over Utah on a neutral site and a true road win at West Virginia. Now the Red Storm get a middling Boston College team close to home. Boston College has Quinten Post, a very talented center, and then not much else around him. This team has played a pretty ‘meh’ schedule and have lost to the only other Top 75 opponents they have faced, Colorado State on a neutral site and N.C. State at home. I think that Joel Soriano will be able to somewhat neutralize Post. And from there St. John’s has the advantage in the backcourt and on the wings. I think it will be a close game for about 25 minutes, but the Red Storm, with the local crowd behind them, should pull away and get a double-digit win.
