Take Detroit (-3) over Milwaukee (7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 7)

We’ve gone 13-5 with our newsletter free plays over the last five months, and I’m looking for another win here. Detroit is coming off its COVID pause. We’ve seen these things cut both ways, with some teams perfectly fine and playing well after a long pause and some teams a little rusty. I think Detroit is going to be fine. They had started to play well before their break, winning four of five. This team played a brutal early schedule specifically to toughen itself up for conference play, and now I think that they are ready. Milwaukee has been playing without freshman Patrick Baldwin. He may be back for this game. However, Milwaukee has actually been playing better without the freshman. I think he might mess up their chemistry, and I do think that he will be rusty since he hasn’t played since Dec. 13 and has played only three times since Nov. 23. Detroit senior Antoine Davis knows this is a chance for him to prove himself to some NBA scouts as well, and he would love to dominate the matchup with the highly touted Baldwin. Throw in the home court edge, and the fact that Detroit is just the better team, and I like them to earn a tough W here. Take Howard over Delaware State. (4:30 p.m., Saturday, January 8)

It was an easy free play win last week with Oregon. We like Howard in this matchup against one of the worst Division I basketball teams in recent memory. Delaware State has lost nine games in a row and, despite being a measly 2-11, does not have a Division I win on the season. In fact, they even lost to Division III Salisbury State. Both teams will not have played since a few days before Christmas. More practice time, a holiday break, and being at home won't change the outcome in this one. Take #454 Minnesota (-2.5) over Chicago (1 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 9)

Final game of the season for both teams in this one as neither will be going to the post-season, making this contest more along the lines of an exhibition game. The Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer is an extremely competitive guy who usually pushes his team harder than most coaches in the league, especially in games like this, as evidenced by his excellent past record during the NFL preseason. The Vikings are coming off an ugly loss last game to Green Bay 37-10, and lots of fingers are being pointed at a few people in the organization for the defeat, including Zimmer, who is being rumored that he will be fired after this contest. Expecting Zimmer to want to win this one here to not only quiet down his critics but to also make a last statement if he is let go after the game. The Vikings overall have been a better team than their 7-9 record this year as the combination of a tough schedule and lots of close losses to mostly good teams really did them in this season. The Vikings have played 10 games against opponents with 8+ wins currently this year, going 3-7 overall in those, and with each of their losses this year except their last game coming by in one possession games. They face off here against a Chicago Bears team that they had little trouble beating just a few weeks ago in a game they were favored by a touchdown on the road. Lay the points here with Minnesota. This game should be a blowout. Dallas has already said they plan on playing their starters in this game. The Cowboys are trying to improve their seeding in the NFC.
