We roll with the under in this divisional matchup. Sonny Gray comes off one of his worst starts of the year, giving up 5 earned runs and no strikeouts in just 4.2 innings. This was only his 3rd time in his last 10 starts that he has allowed 3 earned runs or more. He does his best work at home this season, where he is 2-0 with a 2.83 ERA. I think he bounces back here after a horrific start his last time out. On the flip side, the White Sox will send veteran Johnny Cueto to the mound. He has been consistent this year as he has given up 3 earned runs or less in 9 of his last 10 starts. He took the no decision on July 4th against these Twins and had a season high with 5 walks. Take ‘Over’ 8.5 Houston at L.A. Angels (9:30 p.m., Thursday, July 14)

I am now 28-14 (67%) over the last 42 weeks with my free picks in this space, and I am intent on getting another win this week. I’m still not 100 percent sure who the Angels are going to trot out there for this series finale. But whoever it is, I’m sure he will be a dud. The Angels stink because every fifth or six day they are rolling out some BP arm like Chase Silseth or Michael Lorenzen or Reid Detmers. I think they will go with Silseth in this start. And I don’t think it will go great for him and his 5.84 ERA. I also think the Angels will be able to scratch out a few against Framber Valdez. The Angels just saw the lefty a couple weeks ago. He struck out 13 in six innings but also allowed five walks. He’s allowed 12 walks in his last four starts, and I think the Angels will make some adjustments and take advantage of the extra base runners. For as good as Valdez has been, his starts have seen 10 or more total runs in five of his last 10 starts. The Angels offense has been pathetic lately. But Houston’s hasn’t, averaging over six runs per game over their last 10. The Angels are due to accidentally score some runs, and I think they’ll chip in three or four in a 7-4 Houston win. The Mets have been one of the best stories of the first half of the season, but the Braves have been playing better lately and breathing down their necks. Taijuan Walker has held his own as a starter for New York, going 7-2 with a 2.63 ERA over 15 starts. Walker has been dominating in 7 day starts, going 4-0, and allowing just 5 earned runs over 46 innings (0.98 ERA). I think he will get the job done against the Cubs. Marcus Stroman was sharp in his return from an injured shoulder when he yielded just two hits over 4 innings to the Dodgers in Los Angeles, but he has been a different pitcher when throwing at Wrigley Field. In four starts at home this season, Stroman is 0-3 with a 9.33 ERA with opponents’ batting .321 off him. New York’s offense can score in a variety of ways, and I don’t think they will have troubles scoring in this one. Take Miami over Philadelphia (6:40 p.m., Friday, July 15)

On Friday, we are expected to have a good pitching matchup between Kyle Gibson (4-3, 4.53 ERA) and Sandy Alcantara (9-3, 1.75) in this NL East encounter between Philadelphia and Miami. Gibson has never been a hard thrower and relies on command to hit his spots. Expect the Marlins to have as many right-handed batters as possible because Gibson’s off-speed stuff is very effective against left-hand batters, holding them to a .216 batting average compared to .270 for righties. Alcantara has turned into one of the best hurlers in the National League at 26, with filthy stuff. The Miami right-hander is to a point where you expect him to win every time out. Alcantara is permitting opponents to hit just .193 against his tosses, and they have a slugging percentage of only .284. With Gibson having an ERA over 5.00 on the road and a WHIP of 1.41, the Marlins will have runners on and need the clutch hits to pile up runs. Alcantara has a low 1.59 ERA at home and has already bested the Phillies and Gibson back in April and does it again in the series lid-lifter.
