Here are five things to look forward to in the 2021 NFL season and five things to look forward to in this upcoming college football campaign:
NFL FOOTBALL – 5 THINGS TO WATCH IN 2021
1. Doc’s Sports 50-Year Anniversary!
FIFTY YEARS! This is Doc’s 50th football season and we are looking to make it our biggest and our best ever. Seriously, set your expectations very high for this fall and winter because our entire team is hell-bent on demolishing the books this year. Also, be on the lookout for plenty of extra specials and deals (get subscriptions here) and get on board early!
2. Getting Things Back To “Normal”
We have to give the NFL credit for pulling off a full season last year in the midst of a worldwide pandemic. But as much fun as Wednesday night games, Sunday morning COVID scratches and watching fifth-string emergency quarterbacks play was I think that everyone is looking forward to a more standard NFL season. There are currently eight teams with at least 85 percent of their rosters vaccinated. And as those numbers go up – as well as the numbers in the general public – then the odds continue to increase that we will have full stadiums and stable rosters throughout the season.
3. Who Is The Best In The West?
The AFC and NFL West divisions are both absolutely loaded. In the AFC, two-time defending conference champions Kansas City are still salty about losing to Tampa Bay in the Super Bowl. But they aren’t the only ones entering this fall with a lot of confidence. San Diego is stacked with young talent and hoping that Brandon Staley-Justin Herbert will become the next Sean Payton-Drew Brees. Denver is healthy and has restocked on the defensive side. And Las Vegas is hoping to finally break through in Year 3 of the Gruden Experiment.
The NFC West is even better. San Francisco’s 2020 season was sabotaged by injuries and they should have a full inventory this fall when play begins. Arizona has added stud veterans like J.J. Watt and A.J. Green to an up-and-coming roster. Seattle still has Russell Wilson so they still have a chance. And then there’s Los Angeles, which made one of the biggest moves of the offseason by trading for Matt Stafford. This division race is going to be all-out war.
4. Rebuilding, Reloading or Retracting?
Every single team in the NFL has its own interesting storyline. Some are more interesting than others. Urban Meyer is ushering in a new era in Jacksonville while Houston is lost in the weeds. Who is most likely to challenge the Bills in the East: upstart Miami or relentless New England? Are the Browns really better than the Steelers? Seriously? Will the NFC East be any better than the laughingstock that it was in 2020? Is Aaron Rodgers really not going to play in Green Bay? Understanding which teams are on the way up and which ones are on the way down is going to be crucial to having a successful NFL betting season.
5. Wait, How Many Games Are They Playing?
The NFL expanded the regular season to 17 games, which takes effect this season. Regardless of what you think about the move and the impact it is going to have on things like injuries, regular season records and divisional races there is one thing that is clear: an extra week of the regular season means an extra week of NFL betting! That’s never a bad thing.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL – 5 THINGS TO WATCH IN 2021
Full stadiums? A complete regular season – including nonconference games? A full bowl season? Yes sir! At this point it looks like we are going to have a much more natural and orderly college football regular season. And after the mutant, bastardized season that we had last year – with some teams playing four games, some teams playing 11 and some teams taking month-long COVID breaks – I can’t tell you how much that warms my soul. I can’t overstate how important things like home field advantage are in college football. And handicapping this sport should be much easier this season than it was through that disastrous 2020.
3. Is It Still Just The Usual Suspects?
Ohio State, Clemson and Alabama have taken up 16 of the 28 college football playoff spots over the last seven years. Honestly, the whole football playoff thing has become really stale because of the lack of intrigue. Oh, and all three are overwhelming favorites to make it back to the playoffs this year. However, there are some spoilers out there. And teams like Iowa State, Texas A&M, Georgia, Cincinnati and Anyone From The Pac-12 are all lurking. Hopefully this will be the season that we get a little variety in the Final Four before everyone just starts to tune this sport’s title run out.
4. Who Went Where?
The NCAA granted everyone an additional year of eligibility to make up for last year’s deformed season. The result is that some teams are stacked with super seniors, experience and excessive numbers of returning starters. That should actually create more stability in the betting market for those squads. However, the extra year of eligibility also resulted in a flood of transfers, which can be really difficult for the average fan to keep track of. Throw in the fact that this year’s crop of freshmen enter their college careers off abnormal high school seasons last fall and roster certainty – and uncertainty – is going to be a major theme of this year’s campaign.
5. Bounce Back Or Letdown? Or Does It Matter?
How much stock should we really put into last year’s results? Teams like LSU, Penn State and Auburn completely melted down while squads like Cincinnati, Indiana and Texas A&M were significant overachievers. It is going to be interesting to see how much of that success (and failure) carries over into 2021. Teams have been able to have more standardized offseason programs and should benefit from a full fall training camp. That should benefit the teams with the best coaching staffs and the most talent. However, momentum and confidence are delicate and crucial factors in college football betting. And we will have to see who has them carry over into this year’s schedule.

Free MLB Baseball Prediction From Doc's Sports:
Take #918 Detroit over Minnesota (2 p.m., Friday, July 16)
The Tigers have some unfinished business with the Twins, and this is the perfect spot for an ambush. Detroit is not going anywhere this year, so what do they have to play for? You got it: Revenge and keeping the teams they play out of the playoffs, too. The Tigers are still hitting and hitting well, so if for a minute they are overlooked. Bam, they will put another notch in their belt. Take the Tigers over the Twins in this one! Do not miss out on Doc’s Sports weekend basketball, baseball, and horse racing card. Get them all with a multisport picks package. Rumor has it that with the extremely poor Davish and Caratini trades that the Cubs are rebuilding. As a matter of fact, they were known as sell-offs, not trades. The Padres came out smelling like roses - you can guess what the Cubs came out smelling like. With that said, the team is not only weaker, but morale is down, wondering who is next. This would maybe affect every other game, except this one. The Cubs have no problem getting up for the Cardinals and they HATE to lose to St. Louis at Wrigley. Wind should be blowing out, so expect a high-scoring game with the Cubs coming out on top, in this first game of the series. Do not miss out on Doc’s Sports weekend card highlighted by an MLB Game of the Year on Friday. Get all of the action now with a long-term package. Free MLB Prediction From Allen Eastman:
Take Over 10.5 Texas at Toronto (7 p.m., Friday, July 16)
I am looking for a high-scoring game from these teams to start the second half. Toronto has one of the best lineups in baseball. They are No. 4 in scoring at 5.10 runs per game and they are No. 2 in the Majors in team batting, team OPS and home runs. Vlad Guerrero Jr. showed off his skills in the All Star Game with a home run. The Rangers have struggled at the plate this year. They have hit the ball better and scored more runs on the road over the last two months than they have at home and I look for that to continue here. The ‘over’ is 10-2 in Texas last 12 road games. Toronto is coming off a low-scoring series against the tough pitching of Tampa Bay. I think the Blue Jays will be rested up and will be ready to score some runs in this series opener against the Rangers. Take the ‘over’. Free MLB Prediction From Strike Point Sports:
Take Los Angeles Dodgers over Colorado (8:40 p.m. Friday, July 16)
Julio Urias is starting off the second half of the season for the Dodgers and they will be counting on him throughout this second half as they have dealt with some injuries to their starting pitching. Urias has been great on the road this season going 8-2 with a 3.15 ERA over 10 starts. He has allowed just 4 earned runs over his last three starts (18,1 innings) with Los Angeles winning all three of those contests. Antonio Senzatela will be on the mound for the Rockies and he has pitched better at Coors Field (3.75 ERA) than on the road (6.03). However, Senzatela has been rocked by the Dodgers in two starts this year allowing 11 earned runs over 6 innings pitched with LA batting .438 off him. I like the Dodgers to start off the second half with a victory in this one. If you don’t have an account at Doc’s Sports sign up now and get $60 in free premium member picks click here. Free Soccer Prediction From Robert Ferringo:
Take Trinidad and Tobago over Guatemala (9 p.m., Sunday, July 18)
I nailed an easy newsletter winner last week, predicting a Milwaukee Bucks blowout in Game 3 on Sunday. Let’s get ourselves another winner here! Trinidad and Tobago was able to pull off a stunning result in their opener, taking a draw against Mexico despite getting outshot 30-4. By taking a point in that match they have actually set themselves up for possible advancement out of this group. That would only happen if they can take three points in a win here over Guatemala. Trinidad has actually been playing pretty well. They have won or drawn in their last seven matches. And unlike some of the teams in the Gold Cup field they are in form because they’ve been able to play five matches in the last month. (Martinique, on the other hand, played its first match of 2021 in its Gold Cup opener on July 11). Guatemala wasn’t even supposed to be in this tournament and didn’t qualify. They were thrown in at the last second because another scrub team had COVID issues. They don’t belong here and I think that Trinidad and Tobago might ride a little wave of momentum into the next round.
