Take #973 Texas (+100) over San Diego (9 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 19)

The Texas Rangers go with starter Lance Lynn in this one. Lynn has been fantastic to start the 2020 season, posting a 1.11 ERA thus far. Lynn has not only been striking out lots of guys, but when he does give up contact it's usually not hard contact as evidenced by the fact he's just 1 of 4 starters that's is averaging more than 1 strikeout per inning and less than 86.0 miles per hour in exit velocity. Lynn is coming off an outstanding complete game performance in his last outing, allowing only 2 hits and no walks, and even more impressive is he did so in hitter friendly Coors Field and against a Colorado Rockies offense that leads MLB in team batting average at .275 overall this season. Much easier assignment in this one as he goes into pitcher friendly PetCo Park to face a San Diego team that's hitting just .233 as a team this year. The Padres counter with starter Chris Paddack in this contest. Paddack had a solid rookie campaign last year, but it seems like the league is starting to figure him out as he's doesn't have a big arsenal of pitches, relying most of the time on just two main offerings. He as he posted an ERA over 4.00 the 2nd half of last season, and so far this year his 2020 ERA sits at 4.91 overall. Take Texas in this game. Take Portland over L.A. Lakers (8:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 22)

For this No. 1 vs. No. 8 matchup, I’m going to presume the Lakers win the first two contests of the series. Maybe they cover one or both and because there is no change in venue, but this is where the Lakers come up a bit flat emotionally and Portland is geared up after dropping the first two in the series. This is where Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum really up their game and Carmelo Anthony wants to prove he can still be a contributor off the bench. While the Trail Blazers defense is problematic, the Lakers are not always the most focused of teams and this is a good spot for a very strong effort for Portland. And in case the Blazers would pull an upset in one of the first two tilts, being tied 1-1 with a chance to lead the Lakers in this series and be the talk of the NBA, is ample motivation for them and us catching the points. Sporting then knocked Vancouver out of the tournament on penalties before beating one of the stronger teams in the league, Philadelphia 3-1.
