Take Chicago Cubs (-125) over Pittsburgh (4 p.m., Thursday, July 4)

There should be plenty of fireworks in this game on The Fourth. Pittsburgh throttled the Cubs 18-5 in the series opener on Monday and I expect that to set the tone for a high-scoring series, culminating in this game on Thursday afternoon. I think the Cubs will get the upperhand in this one, though, as I think that they are due to snap out of their recent funk. And the ace in the hole here is betting against loser Pirates starter Jordan Lyles. If I’ve said it once I’ve say it 1,000 times: this guy is a massive loser. He really shouldn’t be a Major League starter. Yet here we are. He has lost four straight starts, allowing 13 runs in 19 innings. Look, Lyles has been in the Majors for nearly a decade. We know who this guy is. He has a career ERA of 5.15. He’s no good! And a motivated Cubs team should take advantage. Jose Quintana has had one really bad start in the last month. Kick that out and he has a decent 3.33 ERA. He’s been unlucky, though, losing six of seven and eight of 10 starts. He’s been better than those W-L numbers suggest and he will pick up a win here. Take 'Over' Chicago Cubs at Pittsburgh (4 p.m., Thursday, July 4)

We are rolling with the over in this one as we expect there to be runs scored on both sides as teams ramp up heading into the All Star break.  The Cubs are in a free fall as of late, having gone 0-3-3 in their last 9 series, and dropped the first game of this series 18-5.  They are going to need their offense to step it up to give them some positive mojo heading into the break.  Quintana comes off 0 earned, 0 walks, 0 HR, in 6 innings in his last start against the Reds, while prior to that walked 9 batters in 3 starts and was in a rough patch compared to how he started the season.  This looks to be a let down spot for Quintana, not to mention he has always struggled in day games with a 5.36 ERA this year in day games vs 3.36 ERA in night games.  He has already faced the Pirates this season going 7 innings, 0 earned, and 11 K'S, so you have to think the Pirates have some revenge here.  Pirates on the flip side despite their up and down season entered this series just 5 games back of the Brewers for the division lead, 4 games back of the Cubs for second place in the division, and just 3.5 games back of a wild card spot.  They will send Lyles to the mound who has started the season off well but has faltered lately allowing 19 earned runs in his last 5 starts.  Another troublesome fact is that he has allowed a HR in each of his last 4 starts.  Lyles faced the Cubs once already this year as well going 6 innings, one earned, and 10 k's, so one has to think the Cubs will have some revenge vs Lyles as well.  You have two teams here that are motivated, have some revenge, and need some good vibes heading into the break.  We think Quintana has a bit of a let down, while Lyles continues to struggle especially against a loaded Cubs offense.  Put it all together and we like the over in this one.
