The Denver Broncos went into last season with 6 straight seasons of 8+ wins or more and 15 of the last 17 years went .500 or better overall. Things fell apart last year for the Broncos as they finished the year 5-11, but keep in mind this is a team that had to use 3 different starting quarterbacks in 2017 and none of them had a QB rating higher than a putrid 73 overall for the season. Denver went out and tried to fix that issue this offseason signing Case Keenum as a free agent. Take 'Over' 34.5 Cleveland at N.Y. Giants (7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 9)

Football is back! We are diving head-first into the NFL Preseason this week, and I will have somewhere around four or five picks on this weekend's action. Next week I will be releasing my 8-Unit College Football Futures Play, and these futures, in all sports, have been insanely profitable over the past 10 years. In fact, I am 15-7 (68%) on my last 22 football futures rated 5.0+, including an 8-Unit win on New Orleans 'Over' 8.5 Wins last year. I like this pick even more, and I am going to hammer this one. As for this play, I see two teams that both want to get this first win under their belts. Cleveland is coming off an 0-16 season. They need wins any way they can get them. And when you consider that they have spent the entire offseason building up their rebuild, I think it is important for them to have a strong showing. Throw in that they know they are on "Hard Knocks", and the Browns are going to be pushing as hard as they can. The Giants have a new coach and a whole boatload of motivation themselves. They are coming off a 3-13 season, and that simply won't stand in New York. Pat Shurmur is an offensive guy. And after the disgusting offensive efforts of the last two seasons, the Giants have to be ready to put some points on the board. Also, the Giants are shifting their defense from a base 4-3 to a 3-4. I'm not entirely certain that they know what is what and who is who just yet. Baker Mayfield is going to get a lot of time for the Browns. And I think that is going to mean points for one team or the other. Cleveland has gone 'under' in seven of eight preseason games with Hue Jackson at the helm. That includes going 0-4 against the total in the preseason last year, and that portended the 0-16 year. Something tells me that they are going to be pushing hard to get points in this one. Both head coaches have outstanding records in the exhibition season, but we will side with Mike Zimmer and his 13-4 record (12-5 ATS). The Vikings are 2-0 in Week 1 the last two years and have a solid rotation of quarterbacks. That is more than what can be said about the Broncos as after Case Keenum there is a major drop-off in talent. Paxton Lynch appears to be a first-round bust, and Chad Kelly has not shown much either. Denver went 4-0 last year in preseason play, and their coach was lucky to keep his job once the regular season completed. They have a great chance to stay in the driver's seat for a home Wild Card game if they take care of business the remainder of the month and use that momentum to roll into the Fall. The White Sox didn't pose much a test for them, but they have four-game series against a Ranger team that can be scary offensively at times. NY needs to find its pitching sooner than later, and this series opener will be treated as a playoff game like most games will be moving forward. Jackson has been a revelation for Oakland. He has a 2.87 ERA and is coming off a great start against Detroit. Jackson has won six of his eight starts and three in a row, and I think he will be able to shut down an Angels lineup that will likely be without Mike Trout again. The Angels are likely going with Felix Pena. He has a 5.00 ERA on the season and has lost four straight starts. Oakland's lineup has been outstanding. They are No. 7 in the league in runs per game and No. 5 in home runs. I think they will get to Pena here. And Oakland will pick up another win. Houston is having to navigate through some injuries, but luckily for them their starting pitching has remained healthy. Gerrit Cole has been great all season, but he is coming off back-to-back losses for the first time this year. He has held the Mariners to a .188 average in two games against them this season, and I think he will shut them down at home where he is 4-1 with a 2.52 ERA in 10 starts. If Wade LeBlanc's two starts against Houston are any indication of things to come, Cole should have plenty of run support from his offense. Houston has rocked LeBlanc in two starts, producing 14 runs on 22 hits (5 home runs) through 12.1 innings. I like the Astros to take advantage in this matchup and get the win.
