This team has adopted a more physical, run-based approach and look more disciplined on both sides of the ball. Take 'Under' 52.5 Massachusetts at Temple (7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 14)
Both teams have been struggling on offense and Thursday night in Lincoln Financial Field we should see a very low-scoring battle between these two. The Temple Owls have scored 16 points in both games this young season, and last weekend they beat Villanova 16-13 and the Owls at home is always a tough place to score points. UMass last weekend actually lost to Old Dominion 17-7 at home, and if they only scored 7 points against ODU what is going to happen Thursday night on the road? I see Temple controlling the clock with establishing the run early, and in the second half I see the Owls controlling the tempo and this game easily flies UNDER. Yes, this is a lot to lay here but we want to lay this on South Florida as we think it is a good time for them to get up to face a decent opponent, and with the nation watching this team we think they will perform in a big way. Keep in mind that Charlie Strong's team is 2-0 and ranked 21st in the nation but they are hardly impressive this year. This team just beat Stony Brook 31-17 as 35-point favorites, which is not very impressive. Plus, this team beat San Jose State in their Season Opener 42-22 as 21-point favorites (failing to cover once again) - and they were down a couple scores in that game early on as well. This is an opportunity for this team to face a competitor they will get up for and also look good doing it and to quell some fears. Illinois is a team that has exceeded expectations thus far for Lovie Smith as they were 6-point underdogs to Western Kentucky and won outright. The defense has given up just 28 points this year to their credit, which is Smith's strength. Having said that, to win this game, this team needs to score and score a lot as South Florida has a prolific offense and an improving defense under Strong. That should be the difference here in that South Florida's defense should hold against an average Illinois defense and South Florida's offense should still be able to move the ball with all the talent they have. The Wildcats are just not good enough to be laying this many points against anybody on the road. Arizona is coming off a three-point home loss to Houston last Saturday, and I do not see them lighting up the scoreboard in this game, either. UTEP is no prize, either, entering this game at 0-2, but they looked better last week against Rice and they return most of their defense from last year. Take #154 BYU (+15.5) over Wisconsin (3:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 16)
There's no doubt that BYU hasn't looked good so far to start this season, but keep in mind they've also played arguably the toughest schedule in CFB this year so far. The Cougars are struggling offensively, but they still have a very solid defensive unit overall. They face a Wisconsin team here who also has trouble scoring points. The Badgers also lost a couple key players over the last few months, and those losses have hurt this team. This Badgers offense has a hard time 'pulling away' from opponents as evidenced again last week when they failed to cover a large number against a feisty Florida Atlantic team. Now the Badgers go on the road here to play what should be a desperate and hungry BYU team who is at home here and who will be fighting hard to keep this one close. Take #170 Western Kentucky (-7) over Louisiana Tech (7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 16)
This game is a rematch of the CUSA title game last year. And just like that one, in which Western Kentucky won 58-44, I like the Hilltoppers to take care of business with another blowout victory. The home team has dominated this series since these two joined CUSA, going 4-0 SU and ATS. Louisiana Tech is 0-5 ATS in its last five games, and this team's defense has been ugly, giving up 81 points in games against Northwestern State and Mississippi State. That Mississippi State game was a big home game against an SEC opponent, and I think Tech will have a letdown here. I don't think that they will be able to slow down this Western Kentucky attack that was frustrated by Illinois on the road last week. WKU quarterback Mike White threw for 4,363 yards last year with 37 touchdowns and just seven interceptions. He has gotten off to a slow start, but I think that he will break out at home. Western Kentucky has gone 5-1 ATS in their last six league games, and the defending conference champions will get off to a strong league start with a blowout win here. Play WKU. Bell has struggled with an ERA of 7.18 since the All-Star break, and this is just his 3rd start out of the bullpen. Opponents have hit .361 against Bell over his two starts this season with an OBP of .452, and he has an ERA of 6.05 in day games this season. Take 'Under' St. Louis at Chicago Cubs (1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 16)
The Chicago Cubs have really struggled to plate runs over the last couple of weeks. They are missing the spark plug at the top of the lineup that they had with Dexter Fowler last year, who is now on the St. Louis Cardinals - Saturday's opponent. This is going to be an intense series that will go a long way in determining the winner of the NL Central with the teams just a couple of games apart. Michael Wacha and Kyle Hendricks are slated to go on Saturday, and I love the way these two are throwing the ball right now. Two teams that have been trending to the over will meet when the Edmonton Eskimos travel east to take on the Toronto Argonauts at BMO Field in Toronto, ON, Saturday afternoon. The Eskimos have posted a 4-1 record to the over in their last five road games and they have gone an excellent 12-5 to the over in their last seventeen games following an ATS win going back to the 2016 season. They have also gone up and over the number in seven of their last ten games played on a Saturday for whatever reason, and they are 6-2 to the over in their last eight games overall. The Argonauts have been an over team as well in the spot they are in here on Saturday as they have gone 10-4-1 ATS in their last fifteen games played in the month of September and they are an impressive 9-1 to the over in their last ten games following a bye week. Throw in the fact that these two teams have gone up and over the number in four of their last five head-to-head meetings in Toronto and eight of their last nine overall and that's where we'll have our play as we expect both teams to struggle to get defensive stops on Saturday afternoon in Ontario.
