Take 'Over' 53.5 Miami at Appalachian State (Noon, Saturday, Sept. 17)
I've nailed back-to-back free pick winners in this space, hitting with Kansas State in college football opening week and scoring with the 'over' in the San Diego-Kansas City game in NFL Week 1. Let's keep it rolling here, and make sure you get on my picks early this week as I go for three straight winning weekends. I have a 7-Unit Play in Thursday's NFL matchup, and these are two teams I track very closely. As for this total, I don't think there is any doubt that we are going to see some points in this game. Everything about the spread suggests that Appalachian State is primed for an upset over heavy public favorite Miami. But if that is the case - and even if it is not - the Mountaineers are going to have to put some points up. Miami has scored 70 and 38 points in its first two weeks, and they have a load of talent on that side of the ball, including underrated Brad Kaaya at quarterback. I know Appalachian State's defense was able to hang tough against Tennessee in the opener and only allow 20 points. But Miami has a better QB and more aggressive scheme. Last year Appalachian State allowed 41 points to Clemson and in 2014 they gave up 52 points to Michigan, so the Mountaineers have had a hard time slowing down big-time programs. Miami has a bye next week, and Appalachian's work against the Vols will keep the Hurricanes from looking past them. I have this one clocked at 37-28. Take 'Over' 81.0 Louisiana Tech vs. Texas Tech (7 p.m., Saturday, September 17)
Two teams that have been trending to the over will meet when the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs hit the road to take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders at Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock, Tex. on Saturday night. Louisiana Tech has posted a 5-2 record to the over in their last seven games following an ATS loss, and they have that same 5-2 record to the over in their last seven nonconference games. They have also gone 15-7 to the over following a game where they scored 40 points or more, and they have gone over the number in six of their last seven games after a game where they put up 450 yards of offense or more. The Red Raiders have been an over team as well in the spot they are in here on Saturday as they have posted a 4-1 record to the over in their last five games following a straight up loss and they have gone an excellent 6-2 to the over in their last eight games played in the month of September. They have also gone 5-2 to the over in their last seven games outside the Big 12, and they have gone up and over the total in seven of their last nine games following a game where they gave up 40 points or more. Throw in the fact that Texas Tech has gone a lights out 19-7 to the over in their last 26 home games, and that's where we'll have our play as we are expecting another shootout featuring the Red Raiders just as we saw last week when they take on the Bulldogs in West Texas on Saturday night. Take 'Over' 65.5 Baylor at Rice (8 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 17)
If you like defense then maybe the other two College Football games on Friday night might be your thing because in this game defense will be nowhere to be found. These two teams played each other in 2015 and a total of 87 points were scored and the total was 74, so that game easily went over. I was a bit shocked that this total wasn't around 68 or higher, and I still believe this game has tons of value at 65.5 or even 66. Baylor has outscored their two opponents this young season 95-20 and the Rice Owls defense has given up an average of 38.5 ppg in their last 2 games. Baylor will have no problem scoring on the road Friday night, and if we can get 14 points or more from the Owls we know that Baylor will provide at least over 50 points. Take #206 California (+8.5) over Texas (10:30 p.m., Saturday Sept. 17)
The hype machine is on in full force with this Texas team as they have started 2-0 on the season, but I do not feel they are a Top 25 team. This will be their first true road game against a Cal team that is able to put up points. Cal is coming off a tough loss to San Diego State last Saturday in a game which they covered the spread despite losing by 5 points. This is just too many points to be giving with a shaky road team that has yet to show up in many true road games in the Charlie Strong era. Texas is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games. Take 'Over' 47 Tennessee at Detroit (1 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 18)
There's usually lots of improvement by second-year starting quarterbacks in the NFL. The Tennessee Titans are hoping that they see the same thing from their second-year QB Marcus Mariota as the former Heisman Trophy winner played well last year in his rookie season. The Titans did a nice job this past offseason getting their franchise quarterback some more help on offense. Mariota faces a below-average Detroit Lions defense here in this game, one that allowed 385 yards passing last week against Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts. The Lions offense is the strength of their team as the Lions put up the highest point total in Week 1 as they scored 39 points in their winning effort. The Lions are playing more of a faster, no huddle offense a majority of the time this season, and that seems to be the style of play that that works best for their current personnel. The Lions offense should be able to put up some points again this week as they go up against one of the worst defenses in the NFL here in this game. Take #267 Baltimore (-6.5) over Cleveland (1 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 18)
I had a winning Week 1 in the NFL last week. I have posted 18 of 22 winning NFL years, and that was a good step to another winning year. I am coming back this weekend with big 6-Unit NFL Plays on Thursday and Monday Night Football, and my top play of the weekend will be a 7-Unit College Football Pick. I have won all three of my big football plays so far this year and will keep that going. As for this pick, play it now because this line is going to move. I think it will get to 7.5 by kickoff. The Browns are in for another long season. Baltimore is coming off a strong Week 1 win over Buffalo. Now they should move to 2-0 by beating the lowly Browns. Cleveland looked terrible last week against the Eagles and their rookie quarterback, giving up 29 points. Baltimore has won 8 of 10 in this series. And if you go back to last year and include this preseason the Ravens are 7-0 ATS while the Browns are 1-7 ATS in that same period. The road team is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings in this series and the Ravens are 7-1 ATS in their last eight trips to Cleveland. Take #278 Arizona (-6.5) over Tampa Bay (4 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 19 )
Tampa Bay looked very good this past weekend, but that was against an Atlanta Falcons team that is nowhere near as good as the Arizona Cardinals. Arizona isn't happy with the way they played against New England, and they will right the ship in front of their home fans this weekend. Arizona has the ability to dominate the football on both sides of the line this weekend as they will put relentless pressure on Winston and cause him to force passes and turn the ball over. Each turnover will put more and more pressure on the Tampa defense, causing easy points for the Cards. Look for the Bucs to struggle to stop David Johnson in both the run game and the passing game. The Cards offense is going to be just too much in this one as the receiving corps plays well and Carson Palmer gets this team back on track. Take the favorite here as they win 34-21. Take 'Over' 8.5 Washington at Atlanta (1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 17)
The Atlanta Braves are building for the future, but that didn't stop them from adding veteran Matt Kemp at the trade deadline. Kemp has added some protection for Freddie Freeman and made the overall lineup much more dynamic over the last six weeks. Overs have been hitting at a 75% clip for the Braves over the last month or so, and that's the direction we are looking in once again on Saturday. Gio Gonzalez of the Nationals comes to town, and he's been up and down all season. The Braves are scheduled to send Williams Perez to the hill, and he has been a disaster this season with a 6.04 ERA.
