Take Washington (-1.5, +120) over Atlanta (7 p.m., Friday, May 8)
I've been hot with my free plays in this space, and I am looking for that to carry over into this week's picks both in the newsletter and for my rated clients. That includes Saturday's 7-Unit MLB Play, and I want to hit a big weekend score. Here we have a team and a pitcher going in opposite directions. Atlanta's weaknesses are being exposed on a nightly basis. They are below .500, despite a solid start, and they are struggling at the plate and on the mound. Their bullpen has been a train wreck, and that's a problem with a guy like Eric Stults on the mound. Stults is a perfectly mediocre lefty. But Washington's Gio Gonzalez is not, and that is whom the Braves will be matched up against in this one. Gonzalez got off to a slow start this season. And he had one awful start at Miami on April 26. But he also shut down the Mets and Cardinals around that weak start, throwing 13 shutout innings. The Braves don't hit lefties at all, and this is only Gonzalez's second home start this year. Washington looks like a team that is picking up steam and playing like the group that everyone expected them to be. I think they will strike first in this series, and I think they will rock Stults and the Braves in this one. Take #916 Detroit (-145) over Kansas City (7 p.m., Friday, May 8)
Another big weekend series between two of the better teams not only in the American League Central but also in all of baseball. Detroit Tigers ace David Price pitched a gem last week over these Kansas City Royals, holding them to only one earned run in the complete win. Price has been his usual solid self here this year with an ERA below 3.00 while allowing just one earned run in four of his first six starts overall. A lot is at stake for the soon-to-be free agent after this season. The Royals counter here with Yordano Ventura in this one. Ventura comes off a suspension and missed his normal start last week, and because of that he will have been off since April 29th. This is a big negative for any starting pitcher as their used to pitching every 5th day or so. Add in the fact that Ventura may be a little cautious going into this one knowing he's being watched a lot closer these days after his role in a big bench-clearing brawl. The Tigers offense is a very good one as most of their best hitters love hard-throwing right-handers, and there's not many in baseball that throw harder than the 23-year-old Ventura. Take 'Over' Boston at Toronto (1 p.m., Saturday, May 9)
Boston and Toronto's offenses have been much better than their pitching has been to start the season, and I think this game will go over. Two of the three games they played last week combined to score over 10 runs, and I see that happening again, especially the way Joe Kelly and Drew Hutchison have been pitching. The last 5 games Hutchison has pitched the combined run totals have been 17, 19, 13, 15, and 17, with two of those starts coming at home. He lasted just 4 innings against Boston, allowing 6 earned runs on 9 hits in a game the Jays won 11-8 on April 28. Kelly has been equally unimpressive and has allowed 5 earned runs in each of his last 3 starts covering 15.2 innings, and in 4 out of his 5 starts this year the teams have combined to score 11 runs or more. I see this total being in the 8-9 run range, and I think these offenses will be able to put up enough runs to cover that and push the total over. Take 'Over' 7.0 Atlanta at Washington (4 p.m., Saturday, May 9)
Julio Teheran and Doug Fister have had solid careers to this point. They both came into this year as guys that their respective teams weren't worried about. On the surface, both of them have pitched pretty well this season. But a closer look points to two guys that may struggle in 2015. For Teheran, his walk rate is up to 3.8 per nine innings so far this season - a 90% increase over last year. He's also giving up the long ball more frequently. For Fister, his strikeouts are down to just 4.1 per nine innings and he isn't inducing nearly as many groundballs. His walk rate has more than doubled from last season as well. Those are some major red flags being masked by solid ERAs. The total on this game isn't based on any of these red flags, so we'll play OVER with confidence. Take New York Yankees (-135) over Baltimore (1 p.m., Sunday, May 10)
Big weekend on the diamond as I have a 7-Unit MLB Play on Wednesday and a 5-Unit MLB play on Thursday. Hopefully this is the start of a monster May run, and I feel great about going after my seventh straight winning season. The Yankees should close out this final game of the series this weekend against the Orioles. New York has been better than anyone expected, and last weekend they earned a big sweep in Boston. They would love another divisional sweep. The Orioles have had a very long two weeks. All the unrest in Baltimore sent them out on the road longer than they expected. This will be their third straight tough road series and their sixth straight game in New York (they play the Mets before the Yankees). It will also be their last road game before heading home. I think they will be looking forward to getting back to Baltimore. I'll go with the Yankees in this one as this matchup should be Michael Pineda versus Bud Norris.
