Take Appalachian State (+13.5) over Ohio (2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 15)
College basketball is back! I have been waiting all year for this, and this weekend is finally here. I have put together one of the best college basketball resumes in the country, and I have produced an unmatched streak of six straight winning years. My clients have averaged $7,500 the last four years alone, and my nonconference hoops picks have earned eight straight winning years for over $55,000 in profit. I will grab the points in this matchup as I expect a vastly improved Appalachian State team. They were one of the worst teams in college basketball last year, but this is a proud program and is focused on a bounce-back year. They have all five starters back and have been reinvigorated under a new coaching staff now that loser Jason Capel (another terrible ex-Duke assistant) is gone. Ohio is working on its third coach in four seasons, with Saul Phillips taking the helm. Because it is the first game for both coaches and teams, I expect it to be a little helter-skelter, and I think that gives the edge to the underdog. Appalachian State was able to take a team trip to the Bahamas this August, and that gave them a jumpstart on their season. That will pay dividends here. As will the fact that Ohio is replacing three starters heading into this year, including leading scorer Nick Kellogg. Ohio has been great at home over the past several years, and I normally wouldn’t bet against them in Athens. But I don’t see where they are motivated to get a blowout in this one. Take #386 Idaho (-5) over Troy (5 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 15)
I have one of my biggest weekends in all sports of the entire year going this week. I have big plays on Thursday (7-Unit NFL), Friday (three 6-Unit Plays), Saturday (7-Unit college play) and Sunday (8-Unit NFL play), and I plan on winning them all! I also think that this free play is another winner as I fully expect Idaho to get a rare blowout win. They are just 1-8 on the season, but they are favored in this one! That really jumped out at me. They have actually outgained three of their last five opponents and two of their last three despite losing all but one of those games. This team’s stats are misleading because of turnovers. They are 4-1 ATS in their last five games and have been overlooked by the books. But I think that the home team has a huge edge here, and they should lay the wood to an unmotivated Troy team. These two teams met earlier this week in Madison Square Garden, where the Rangers defeated the Penguins in a whitewash 5-0. Now they meet again in Pittsburgh on Saturday night, and there’s no question the Pens will bring a stronger effort offensively. They are leading the league in goals scored by a decent margin and have been dominant at home. The Rangers will likely have to pick up the pace as I see them falling behind early and playing some catch up. That should open the door for a lot more shots and scoring chances for both teams. This should be a very boring punch-and-hold fight as usually that is how Klitschko boxes. Kubart hasn't tasted a loss yet, and I'm sure he will want to make this fight a hard-hitting, stay-in-the-middle-of-the-ring kind of fight but again Wladimir is too smart in the ring. Klitschko will dominate his jab all fight long, and when he feels trouble he will hold or try and dance around. I don't see an exciting fight here, and this fight will go past 10 rounds unless Kunart takes control. Kubart will need to control this fight if he wants to win by points or KO, but again Wladimir Klitschko is too smart to follow that plan. When Klitschko fought Povetkin, that fight went the distance, and I see the same fight plan early Saturday evening, and most likely Klitschko wins this fight and this fight goes past the 10th round.
