Take OVER 8.0 Toronto at Kansas City (8 p.m., Thursday, May 1)
Two overrated hurlers do battle Thursday in Kansas City as the Royals host the Blue Jays. Mark Buehrle gets the nod for the Jays in his sixth start of the season. While Buehrle has gotten off to a nice start at 4-1 with a 2.16 ERA, there really isn't anything to get excited about. He hasn't developed a new pitch, hasn't changed his mechanics and isn't in his prime anymore. He's the same Mark Buehrle we've known for more than a decade, so let's slot him in with an ERA in the high 3's or possibly low 4's. Jeremy Guthrie is looked at as a middle-of-the-rotation type starter for the Royals, but Kansas City could only dream of getting that kind of production this season. The veteran right-hander has seen his peripheral numbers decline for the last couple of years and he's now striking out just 4.8 batters per nine innings. It's tough to survive in this league with such a low strikeout rate, especially considering he isn't a groundball specialist. On top of two overrated starters in this game, both bullpens overachieved last season, and we should see some regression in 2014. In fact, there are three key relievers on the disabled list between these two clubs right now. I'm not crazy about either one of these offenses, but that's factored into the number plenty. Take UNDER St. Louis at Chicago Cubs (2:20 p.m., Friday, May 2)
Normally we would wait and see the previous days' results prior to doing the baseball selection, but what we have here is a contest that has a great shot of going under the posted total. Travis Wood got rocked in his last start against Milwaukee, giving up 5 earned runs in a little under 6 innings, which turned out to be a 3-5 loss for the Cubs. Prior to that, he had given up 7 runs in 24 innings overall, and this is a great opportunity for him to step up here and pick up the win and bounce-back. But, it is difficult to go against the Cardinals and Wainwright, but we do suspect that whenever Wood has the opportunity to face an ace, on the bounce-back and an afternoon game at that, that this contest would likely go below the posted total on a decent public fade as well. Note, the last time Wood pitched against St. Louis he gave up 3 earned runs in 1 inning, so this is a revenge and bounce-back spot for him as well for multiple reasons. The Cardinals are 14-14 as they enter Wednesday's play, so they still need quality starts and especially quality efforts against sub-.500 teams. Wainwright has not given up a run in 24 innings and is 5-1 with a 1.20 ERA to boot. For all these reasons, look for this contest to likely go below the posted total this early Friday afternoon. Free MLB Baseball Prediction From Jason Sharpe:
Take #924 Minnesota (+100) over Baltimore (8 p.m., Friday, May 2)
This is a play against Baltimore Orioles starter Ubaldo Jimenez. The 30-year-old veteran right-hander looks to have completely lost it. His velocity is way down this season combined with his lack of control makes him one of the worst starting pitchers in the game. The problem Baltimore has is they just signed Jimenez to a big off-season contract in the winter, and they must stay committed to a guy most clubs would have easily given up on by now. Jimenez comes in with an ERA of 6.59, has zero quality starts this season, a WHIP at 1.83 and the O's are 0-5 in the five games he has started this year.

The Minnesota Twins counter here with Ricky Nolasco on the hill. Nolasco is much like Jimenez, a veteran hurler whose better days look to be behind him. He's also gotten off to an ugly start this year as well, but there are a few excuses we can use for the 31-year-old right-hander. Nolasco has started four of his five games this year on the road. In his one start at home he was excellent, going eight strong innings while allowing just one run and getting the win. The one big thing Nolasco and the Twins have going in this one is the Minnesota offense has been very good to start the season. In fact the Twins lead all of baseball in on-base percentage currently.
