The NCAA Tournament can be one of the most profitable – or the most difficult – times of the year for sports better. With so much high-profile action going on across the country in such a short amount of times, and featuring such a vast array of college basketball teams, it can be a great opportunity to pad your bankroll and have a lot of fun.
Our college basketball team is used to beating the sportsbooks throughout the entire season. But they also understand that March Madness is an entirely different animal! Here are some NCAA Tournament betting tips from some of the top college basketball handicappers in the country:
Robert Ferringo: "The last five national champions – Villanova (twice), North Carolina, Duke and Connecticut – have combined to go 32-4 against the spread in the NCAA Tournament. And over the last 11 years the eventual national champions have combined to go 57-9 against the spread in the NCAA Tournament. That is an 86 percent success rate! I know no one knows who is going to win the national title before the tournament starts. But when you see one of the powerhouse teams roll through the early rounds, covering the spread as they go, you absolutely should jump on the bandwagon and bet them until the wheels come off. Further, over the last 17 years the eventual national champion covered the spread in their first game 14 times. So if one of the heavy favorites isn't good enough to cover an inflated number in the first round that is generally an indicator that they aren't good enough to cut down the nets."
Doc's Sports “The best NCAA Tournament betting tip I can give you is to look at the match-ups and study the strength of schedule by each team. You need to study each team’s wins and losses throughout the season and why they won or lost those games. Did they play better against top opponents and have letdowns against lower opponents, or maybe they were not tested at all because of a cupcake schedule? You also need to study each team’s strengths and weaknesses. Does a team shoot extremely well from beyond the arc and now face an opponent who has struggled protecting the perimeter? Is the team a really bad free-throw shooting team? Because that could matter down the stretch if the game is close. Of course, you always need to look at injuries, and figure out if a team just getting healthy or have they been recently hurt by an injury. If this is the case, then you need to look back at that team’s games with and without that injured player to determine if there is any value in the gain or loss of that player. “
Jason Sharpe “Someone may argue that they don't know enough about those smaller leagues to pick a winner but that's also true in the reverse, meaning the other bettors and the bookmaker also don’t follow these leagues closely. That makes it easier for a hard working handicapper to find a winning edge when focusing on the smaller conferences over the bigger ones. At the end of the day remember one thing, you get back the same currency for a winning bet on Eastern Washington or Cornell as you do for a winning bet on Duke or UCLA.”
Raphael Esparza: “I also look at totals between teams from big conferences and teams from the smaller, no name and unknown conferences. These are the real mismatch games where the teams from those small conferences come into March Madness with nothing to lose. As a result they will play a high tempo game and that usually results in a lot of scoring. If the total is low I look to jump on the ‘over’.”
Vernon Croy: “The best March Madness tip I can give you is that you need to study each team’s strengths and weaknesses. If this is the case, then you need to look back at that team’s games with and without that injured player to determine if there is any value in the gain or loss of that player.”
