Monday Night Football Picks: Baltimore Ravens at Cleveland Browns Odds & Predictions
by Alan Matthews - 11/26/2015
Will I occasionally check in on this week's Monday night game between Baltimore and Cleveland? Of course -- I will have money on the game, plus it still matters in terms of fantasy football leagues and confidence pools. But I definitely won't be watching this lousy matchup between the 3-7 Ravens and 2-8 Browns. (I'll be watching Warriors at Jazz in NBA action as that's Golden State's best chance to lose for a while if it is still unbeaten entering the game.)
Monday Night Football Predictions: Buffalo Bills at New England Patriots Odds
by Alan Matthews - 11/19/2015
Enjoy the "Monday Night Football" game in Week 11 between AFC East rivals Buffalo and New England because it's looking like the only really good matchup remaining on MNF between two playoff-caliber teams until the finale on Dec. 28 when Cincinnati visits Denver.
Monday Night Football Picks: Houston Texans at Cincinnati Bengals Odds
by Alan Matthews - 11/13/2015
Houston was on the bye in Week 9, yet by doing nothing its chances to win the division got much, much better. The Texans (3-5) trail the Indianapolis Colts by a half-game in the putrid AFC South. Indy (4-5) upset Denver on Sunday, but Tuesday the Colts learned that star quarterback Andrew Luck will miss likely a month with a lacerated kidney.
Monday Night Football Predictions: Chicago Bears at San Diego Chargers Odds
by Alan Matthews - 11/5/2015
Every year, I make the argument that the NFL should allow ESPN to flex games into the "Monday Night Football" slot as it does allow NBC to do so later in the season for the Sunday night game. But I get why MNF is a different animal because moving a game a few hours later on Sunday isn't a big deal for fans or stadium preparations, etc., but shifting a game an entire day is. So it's not going to happen.
Monday Night Football Predictions: Indianapolis Colts at Carolina Panthers
by Alan Matthews - 10/29/2015
I didn't see this Week 8 Monday night matchup coming. Sure, I thought we might have one team at 6-0 and one at 3-4. One team with a No. 1 overall pick who is an MVP candidate and the other also with a No. 1 overall pick but one having a disappointing season. But I figured the Colts would be the unbeaten club with Andrew Luck as an MVP leader and the Panthers the one struggling with Cam Newton regressing a bit.
Monday Night Football Picks: Baltimore Ravens at Arizona Cardinals Odds
by Alan Matthews - 10/22/2015
If you had told me that in the Monday night game in Week 7 of the NFL season that one team was going to be 1-5 and last in its division and the other 4-2 and leading its division, then, yeah, I would have believed it. Just that I would have thought Baltimore was atop the AFC North with that winning record and Arizona at the bottom of the NFC West. Proves what I know at times.
Monday Night Football Picks: New York Giants at Philadelphia Eagles Odds
by Alan Matthews - 10/15/2015
How amazing have the past two Monday Night Football games been? Just wish I had gotten them right on my picks here. This past Monday, I would have been correct in taking San Diego -2.5 against Pittsburgh had the Chargers been able to hold up Steelers running back Le'Veon Bell just one second longer ... alas Bell scored on a 1-yard run at the gun in an incredibly gutsy call by Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin.
Monday Night Football Picks: Pittsburgh Steelers at San Diego Chargers Odds
by Alan Matthews - 10/9/2015
So what are the main story lines for this Monday's game between Pittsburgh and San Diego? I'll give you two. First, it was supposed to be a fairly rare meeting between two members of that 2004 NFL quarterback draft class, with the Chargers' Philip Rivers going No. 4 overall to the Giants and then being immediately traded to San Diego in the Eli Manning swap, and the Steelers' Ben Roethlisberger, who went No. 11 overall. Obviously Big Ben out again with his knee injury is the biggest key here.
Monday Night Football Predictions: Detroit Lions at Seattle Seahawks Odds
by Alan Matthews - 10/1/2015
When the Seattle Seahawks started the season 0-2, some people were already putting a fork in them. But apparently Pro Bowl safety Kam Chancellor cures all as his return led to a blowout win over Chicago last week. I would caution this, however: the Bears are probably the worst team in the NFL. Yet the Seahawks have jumped to +800 third-favorites at Bovada to win Super Bowl 50, +425 second-favorites behind Green Bay to win the NFC for a third straight year and -110 favorites to win the NFC West again even though division-rival Arizona has looked dominant in its 3-0 start.
Monday Night Football Picks: Kansas City Chiefs at Green Bay Packers Odds
by Alan Matthews - 9/24/2015
Have you seen the college football and NFL schedules this week? They both leave a lot to be desired. Thus, I would argue that Monday night's matchup between Kansas City and Green Bay is the best of the NFL games in Week 3. Yes, I know Falcons-Cowboys features a pair of 2-0 teams, and I previewed that here at Doc's, but that game isn't all that great with Brandon Weeden starting for Dallas at QB.
Monday Night Football Predictions: New York Jets at Indianapolis Colts Odds
by Alan Matthews - 9/17/2015
There were some top Super Bowl contenders that lost in Week 1. Pittsburgh in New England, Seattle in St. Louis, and Baltimore in Denver come to mind. But those games were all competitive. So I think it's fair to say that no potential Super Bowl team looked worse last week than the Indianapolis Colts. Thus, I'd also say that makes Monday night's home opener against the Jets a must-win because we all know how hard it is for 0-2 teams to make the playoffs.
Free Monday Night Football Picks: Philadelphia Eagles at Atlanta Falcons
by Alan Matthews - 9/10/2015
As has been the case for the past few years, we get a Monday night doubleheader on ESPN for Week 1 of the NFL season. None of the four teams involved made the playoffs last year, and I don't think that either the Minnesota Vikings or San Francisco 49ers, who square off in the nightcap, will in 2015, either.
Monday Night Football Predictions: Denver Broncos at Cincinnati Bengals Odds & Picks
by Alan Matthews - 12/19/2014
There have been a lot of duds on “Monday Night Football” this season, but thankfully ESPN has saved the best for last with a potential AFC Playoff preview between the Broncos and Bengals in the Monday finale of 2014. It's a very important game to both division leaders.
Monday Night Football Picks: New Orleans Saints at Chicago Bears Odds
by Alan Matthews - 12/12/2014
Earlier this week, Bears receiver Brandon Marshall said he thought that this Saints-Bears matchup between 5-8 disappointing teams should be taken off “Monday Night Football”. I tend to agree even though New Orleans could be in sole possession of first place in the NFC South by Sunday evening. Alas, the NFL doesn't do flex scheduling for the Monday game, only the Sunday night ones. Marshall doesn't have to watch. He's out for the season after suffering rib and lung injuries last week against Dallas, ending his streak of consecutive 1,000-yard seasons at seven.
Monday Night Football Predictions: Atlanta Falcons at Green Bay Packers Odds & Picks
by Alan Matthews - 12/5/2014
It feels weird to say with Green Bay at 9-3 and Atlanta just 5-7, but the Monday night matchup this week is a battle of division leaders (the Falcons may be a half game back of New Orleans by then). Obviously both could use this win in a big way.
Monday Night Football Picks: Miami Dolphins at New York Jets Odds
by Alan Matthews - 11/28/2014
OK, don't laugh, but I think there is a chance that the Miami Dolphins can win their first AFC East title since 2008. Yes, I'm well aware that the Dolphins (6-5) entered Week 13 three games behind New England in the division. Not saying I would bet on Miami winning the East.
Monday Night Football Predictions: Baltimore Ravens at New Orleans Saints Odds & Picks
by Alan Matthews - 11/21/2014
OK, let's talk about my favorite two divisions in the NFL this season, the Ravens' AFC North and Saints' NFC South. I say favorite because all four teams in each could still win the division. Yes, even the 2-8 Tampa Bay Buccaneers aren't dead in the South.
Monday Night Football Picks: Pittsburgh Steelers at Tennessee Titans Odds
by Alan Matthews - 11/14/2014
How much fun is the AFC North? Entering Week 11, every team in the North had a winning record. It's the first division in which every team is at least two games above .500 at any point in a season since the 1935 NFL Western Division. That stat totally shocks me.
Monday Night Football Picks: Carolina Panthers at Philadelphia Eagles Odds
by Alan Matthews - 11/7/2014
How many teams could you realistically say that could still win a division title after losing their starting quarterback halfway through the season? Seriously. Denver? Please. New England? Nope. Indianapolis? One of NFL's worst teams without Andrew Luck. The Packers without Aaron Rodgers? OK, they did last season, but that's just because the rest of the NFC North was so average. The Saints without Drew Brees are the Rams. The Steelers without Big Ben are the Titans. Maybe teams like Seattle or San Francisco could do it because they have strong running games and very good defenses.
Monday Night Football Predictions: Indianapolis Colts at New York Giants Odds & Picks
by Alan Matthews - 10/31/2014
Monday night's game will determine if Giants coach Tom Coughlin will be back as the team's coach next season. At least that's my opinion. New York has missed the playoffs two straight years and four of the past five. Coughlin is the NFL's oldest coach and longest-tenured in the NFC. If New York loses at home off a bye week to fall to 3-5, I think the playoffs are a huge long shot and Coughlin will be out. After all, think about the Giants likely have to go against for a wild-card spot (no shot at NFC East title): Seattle, San Francisco, Dallas/Philadelphia (whichever doesn't win the East) and Green Bay/Detroit (whichever doesn't win the North). Good luck with that.
