by Robert Ferringo - 05/10/2005
"You gotta be down big to win big," said an adrenaline-addled, alcohol-suffused Donny Perotti late Saturday night. "I was like, 'Did that really just happen?'" Perotti (a.k.a. Donny Blaze) is a former college roommate of mine who once tapped a five-month old quarter-barrel of Bud Light and pounded a glass to win a seven dollar bet. He is also the same man who placed a healthy $100 wager on the 10-18 exacta for the 131st running of the Kentucky Derby in Louisville, Ky. on Saturday, choosing the numbers because his birthday is October 18 (10/18).

by Max - 05/02/2005
Monday was full of major events as some of the biggest names in Horse Racing dropped out of the field for the Kentucky Derby. D. Wayne Lukas best hope for a victory had to drop out of the race because he suffered a fractured sesamoid. Doc's Sports 2005 Early Kentucky Derby Race News & Notes
by Doc Sports - 04/29/2005
The Kentucky Derby race is now one week away and the field is starting to take shape. It appears that the field may be full with 20 horses as some late long shots vie to enter the fray. With this many horses, the auxiliary gate will be in effect and that can play a prominent role in this race. The best horses in the Kentucky Derby race could struggle and find the path they tread very unappealing. This makes the race very interesting and exciting, as we feel ten horses have a legitimate shot of winning.

Kentucky Derby Party -- Infield or Clubhouse: A Kentuckian's Advice on Throwing a Derby Bash
by Kaelan Hollon - 04/28/2005
Staring down the long, cold barrel of a Kentucky State Trooper's handgun at 2:49 in the morning in the first weekend of May is not a fun way to bide time. Kentucky takes its horses very, very seriously, and attempting to hop on a $120,000 thoroughbred during one's stay in the Bluegrass State does not a good Derby Day make, as a friend of mine recently found out. Handcuffs hurt. And the jails in the Commonwealth? Let me tell you something, Bubba, they ain't a bit of fun.

Kentucky Derby Information - Field Shaping Up
by Doc's Sports
The last tune-up race for the Kentucky Derby took place Saturday in Keeneland. The Coolmore Lexington Stakes was run over a mile and sixtieth under sloppy conditions. The race did not go as expected with the favorite Rockport Harbor finishing a disappointing seventh. This horse was in contention for the first three-fourths of a mile then flattened out on the straightaway and fell back. This paved the way for Coin Silver to emerge victorious after struggling to get out of the gate.

Past Kentucky Derby Winners
by Victor Ryan
Past Kentucky Derby winners have ranged from the legendary (Secretariat, Seattle Slew, War Admiral, Affirmed, etc.), to the rather undecorated (Lil E. Tee, Sea Hero). And, although in most expert's estimations (sorry Smarty Jones fans), it has been at least 15 years since a truly great horse has won the Derby. But the past two winners have been as popular as any of the previous 128.

Doc's Possible Kentucky Derby Contenders
by Max
Three major races involving Kentucky Derby contenders took place last Saturday. The three races where held in different regions of the country and had enough interest that NBC televised all three of the races live. Two out of the three races went as expected with the chalk coming in, but that was not the case in California. Any winning ticket from the Santa Anita Derby would have netted one a substantial profit. The following will recap the stakes races from Santa Anita, Aqueduct, and Hawthorne and give you the current state of some of the Kentucky Derby contenders.

2005 Kentucky Derby -- Early Preview
by Victor Ryan
The story of the road to the 2005 Kentucky Derby has not been about a horse, but rather a man from Brooklyn. Two-time Derby winning trainer Nick Zito is poised to do this year what to many seems almost inconceivable-that is have five starters, or exactly one-quarter of the maximum field of 20, in this year's Run for the Roses.
