PGA Tour Golf -- Cialis Western Open Preview And Picks
by Aaron "1-iron" Garry - 06/28/2005
When Frank Sinatra used to croon about "Chicago, Chicago - That toddlin town," he probably didn't have the 2005 edition of the Cialis Western Open in mind. But "Old Blue Eyes" would be proud of "Old 1-iron" this week, as we don't need lady luck to make several key assumptions about the upcoming week's results.

To Bet Smart or With Your Heart? Betting The Field
by Justin M. Connery - 06/24/2005
Generally sports fans have their favorite teams or players. Therefore, when public or 'square' bettors place a wager, it's a common thing to see that bet go on their favorite team or player. In team sports like baseball or football it's easier to justify bets being placed on favorite or 'public' teams like the Yankees or the Patriots because they play as a unit, and no single person is solely responsible for the outcome of the game based on their own individual performance.

PGA Tour -- Barclays Classic Preview and Picks
by Aaron "1-iron" Garry - 06/20/2005
We return to the fabled Westchester Country Club, site of the Barclays Classic. Big hair, thick accents, and Stan Indursky (Alec Baldwin from Along Came Polly) will be on the menu as Sergio Garcia looks to defend his 2004 Barclays Classic title against a less then stellar field this year. Ernie Els, who has been a mainstay at Westchester is skipping this week, along with Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Retief Goosen - as all three begin to prepare for the British Open at St. Andrews in three weeks. Vijay Singh is in the field as he looks to win another meaningless tournament in pursuit of Tiger Woods title of No. 1 in the world.

PGA Tour Golf - 2005 US Open Championship Preview
by Aaron "1-iron" Garry - 06/13/2005
The 2005 US Open Championship returns to the beautiful Village of Pinehurst and the famed Pinehurst No. 2, for the first time since Payne Stewart's dramatic victory in 1999 over Phil Mickelson. If Scotland was where golf was born, then it was Bar Mitzvah'd in Pinehurst. This little bastion of a village is a golfer's dream. Forty courses within a 10-mile radius make the Sandhills of North Carolina a golfers Mecca, while No. 2 is the shrine to which all pay homage.

PGA Tour Golf -- Booz Allen Classic Preview
by Aaron "1-iron" Garry - 06/06/2005
The tour moves to the Washington DC area for the Booz Allen Classic. While this tournament is normally held at the TPC of Avenel (Yes, the one you shot 56 at in Sega PGA Tour '93), it takes a one-year break while the course undergoes renovations and improvements. During the break, the tournament is extremely fortunate to have Congressional Country Club as the venue this year. This venerable course has hosted several major championships including the 1995 US Senior Open (Tom Weiskopf) and 1997 US Open (Ernie Els), and will be the site of the 2009 US Amateur, and the 2011 US Open.

PGA Tour Golf - The Memorial Tournament
by Aaron "1-iron" Garry - 05/31/2005
We head to Dublin, Ohio for Jack Nicklaus's competition - The Memorial Tournament. This event is so big in Ohio that even our nation's worst newspaper, The Columbus Dispatch, gets geared up with a few extra pages this week. The Memorial Tournament is by invitation only, so if Jack don't like ya - ya don't get an invite. Kind of like the Feldman Bar Mitzvah in New Albany.

PGA Tour Golf - FedEx St. Jude Classic Preview
by Aaron "1-iron" Garry - 05/23/2005
My No. 3 pick for the week - Kenny Perry steamrolls the field at the Colonial to pick up his second win of the year, and second Colonial win in three years. What an impressive performance by the feisty veteran. Every time KP takes the club back with that Harley Davidson swing, "1-iron" expects fireworks in the direction of the gallery.

PGA Tour Golf - the Bank of America Colonial Preview
by Aaron "1-iron" Garry - 05/17/2005
The tour stays in Texas for the Bank of America Colonial, as Steve Flesch defends his title. "1-iron" considers this field to be one of the weaker fields of the year, as Woods, Els, Goosen and Singh are sitting it out. Only Phil Mickelson represents the best in the world this week.

PGA Tour Golf -- Byron Nelson Classic Preview
by Aaron "1-iron" Garry - 05/10/2005
Vijay Singh tops Jim Furyk and Sergio Garcia in a playoff at the Wachovia Classic in Charlotte, NC. In doing so, Garcia becomes only the fifth player in PGA Tour history to dismantle a six-shot lead heading into the final day, while Singh collects win No. 3 this year, in addition to $1 million in cash. If you rolled the dice with "1-iron" this week, you probably made a bit of dough to spend on your Mom.

"1-iron" must start out this column with a tip of the cap to Pete Dye, Kelly Gibson and Steve Elkington for their impressive work on the TPC of Louisiana. The Zurich Classic has always been a staple of my television diet, largely due to my affection for English Turn Country Club and the drama that always seems to unfold there. The decision to move the tournament from English Turn to the TPC was not one that sat well with me since the time it was announced in the fall of last year.

PGA Tour Golf -- Zurich Classic Preview

If you listened to ol' "1-iron" this week, we laughed all the way to the bank. Our No. 1 pick from last week's "Those Who Will" certainly did us proud at the 9,200-yard Redstone Country Club. Vijay Singh closed out John Daly in a playoff to take first prize money at the Shell Houston Open. Something about Houston must remind Big V of that down home Fijian cookin' I guess.

PGA Golf - Shell Houston Open Preview
by Aaron "1-iron" Garry
For those of you who were able to watch the entire final round of the MCI Heritage Classic, I applaud the effort. I'll admit, I even threw back a cocktail of Pepto and Maalox to make it through. While the epic Clarke versus Lonard dual won't qualify as an ESPN Instant Classic (although I've watched the "Olazabal whiff" over and over again), it will certainly go down in the history books as one of the more entertaining final rounds in recent history.
