2014 World Cup Free Picks: Switzerland vs. Ecuador
12 p.m., Sunday, June 15 – Estadio Nacional Mane Garrincha, Brasilia (ABC)
Match Betting Lines
The Swiss began their 2014 World Cup with a+160 price against the South Americans. Ecuador is listed at +240 while the draw is at +212. The total for this match is 2, EVEN for the ‘over’ and -120 with the ‘under’.
Switzerland
The Swiss aren’t a team you’d peg to have much World Cup success based on how they look on paper. There isn’t a single name that jumps off the page to casual observers, and most soccer fans simply overlook them for another more notable European power. Nonetheless, team Switzerland is always a worthy opponent. A new wave of talent leads the way this summer, notably winger Xherdan Shaqiri and defender Ricardo Rodgriguez.
Ecuador
Most known for their dominant home pitch advantage in the high altitude city of Quito, Ecuador will have a small edge playing on continental soil but will also be at a huge disadvantage coming down to sea level to play away from their country’s capital.
Match Analysis
Ecuador no longer can rely on the high altitude to prevail against weakened lungs of their opponents. That was a huge asset during the South American qualifying process. Switzerland, despite France being the favorite of the group, is actually the top rated seed in this group, and they’ll carry the momentum from their own UEFA qualifying success into this opening match.
Key Injuries, Suspensions, Yellow Cards
Ecuador was forced into a last-minute replacement, as veteran midfielder Segundo Castillo was unable to recover from a knee injury he suffered in one of the friendly matches leading up to the World Cup. Oswaldo Minda of Chivas USA in the MLS takes his place on the roster.
Tony’s Pick
I see two teams wanting to establish themselves early as a favorite to advance in the group with likely winners France. Ecuador will match blows for the first half hour, but I see Switzerland’s balance and overall skill taking the reins in the second half. A goal or two by them in the later stages of this match sees the Swiss grab the three points and a brilliant start to their group stage campaign.
