2014 World Cup Free Picks: Netherlands vs. Argentina
4 p.m., Wednesday, July 9 - Arena de Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo (ESPN)
Match Betting Lines
Argentina are favorites to reach the World Cup Final at +135 in this match. Netherlands are +200 while the draw can be had for +240. The total is set at 2 goals.
Netherlands
Written off in the group stages in favor of defending champion Spain and upstart Chile, Holland have impressed at Brazil to say the least. Lead by Arjen Robben and Robin van Persie, the Dutch have produced some of the most consistent football we've seen at this tournament. Holland's weak point was seen as their defense, however they've only allowed a handful of goals throughout and have been especially strong since the knockout stages began.
Argentina
Similar to their rivals Brazil, Argentina turned in their best World Cup match in the quarterfinals. The South Americans scored a quick early goal against Belgium and that was enough to secure qualification through to the semis. Lionel Messi was bogged down for the most part, so other players stepped up to produce, notably striker Gonzalo Higuain's side-footed finish that turned out to be the match winner. One more step in order to get to the Final in Rio, and Argentina have to be chomping at the bit with their World Cup goal in direct sight.
Match Analysis
I'd expect this to be a cagey affair. As high-powered an offense as Argentina has to offer, they have been fairly defensive-minded. I would presume the same to hold up against a Dutch side that will also approach this match with caution, knowing how much is on the line. Between Messi, Higuain, Robben, van Persie and others, so much star power will be on display here. Any one moment of individual brilliance is likely to produce a massive win to propel their team forward.
Key Injuries, Suspensions, Yellow Cards
Angel Di Maria limped off against Belgium as the speedy winger was substituted early in the quarters. Surely his status for the semifinal match will be up for question depending upon the severity of his injury.
Tony's Pick
Argentina just have it. I think the South Americans are on a mission not only to reach the Final in Rio de Janeiro but also win this tournament in the back yard of their continental rivals. Lionel Messi continues to lead a team that looks so dangerous despite still not yet hitting their stride and top gear. Holland will no doubt be a formidable opponent, however I see Argentina taking up one half of the match-up that produces a World Cup champion on July 13. South America over Europe.
