2014 World Cup Free Picks: France vs. Honduras
3 p.m., Sunday, June 15 – Estadio Beira-Rio, Porto Alegre (ABC)
Match Betting Lines
France are heavy favorites to begin their 2014 World Cup with a victory at -266. Honduras are +1200 underdogs along with the draw being priced at +400. The total for this match is set at 2.5, +115 over the ‘over’ and -135 on the ‘under’.
France
Individually speaking, France has as much talent as any other team in the field. Granted the loss of winger Franck Ribery is a huge blow, but there is plenty of skill left for the French to find big time success at this tournament. Paul Pogba is perhaps the best young player in the world, and his presence in the midfield will help set the tempo.
Honduras
Welcome to the party. Honduras no longer gets to face its inferior CONCACAF opponents, but rather a giant leap in talent is the task at hand as they open World Cup play. The Central American outfit is competing in its third World Cup tournament, however they’ll find it difficult just to get a result from any of their three group play fixtures.
Match Analysis
France has world-class players at every position. Honduras does not. While the World Cup does offer a ton of enticing match-ups, it also produces some big time mismatches, and this is one of them. The French won’t be slowed nor stopped here. Expect a one-sided affair.
Key Injuries, Suspensions, Yellow Cards
Again, Bayern Munich’s Franck Ribery’s absence is a tough luck situation for France. However I do not believe missing him on the field will affect their results one way or another. France has everything they need to either win or lose based on the players ready to play for manager Didier Deschamps.
Josh’s Pick
France is going to enjoy a comfortable World Cup opener. They cruised 8-0 in their final warm-up match against Jamaica prior to traveling to Brazil. And while this one isn’t going to be an embarrassment for Honduras such as that aforementioned score line, France will control possession and the match from the first kick. France wins 4-0.
