2014 World Cup Free Picks: England vs. Italy
6 p.m., Saturday, June 14 – Arena Amazonia, Manaus (ESPN)
Match Betting Lines
England are +200 to win the match, and alternatively can be had as a PK (draw is a no bet) for +105. Italy are +160 and likewise can be bet as a PK at -125. The total is 2 goals with +110 being on the ‘over’ and -130 for the ‘under’.
England
Despite their fans always approaching the national team with an abundance of cynicism, I fancy England as a legit contender at least to make it to a quarterfinal or semifinal spot in Brazil. A select crop of young playmakers will make or break England’s chances, and the likes of Daniel Sturridge, Jack Wilshire, Raheem Sterling and Ross Barkley are ones to watch for the English during the initial group stages.
Italy
The Italians are always a factor come World Cup time. But speaking very matter of fact, I don’t see it for them, especially in a difficult group. I think both England and Uruguay are better teams overall, and the lack of consistent scoring as well as a proven forward to partner with Mario Balotelli up front is going to hamper their chances in Brazil.
Match Analysis
England know a dull approach won’t cut it. They relied on passive football too much in the past. They will need to play attacking style going forward, and I see them doing that with success. Italy defend well, but I don’t see enough with their attack to match England’s creativity.
Key Injuries, Suspensions, Yellow Cards
Italy’s Riccardo Montolivo will miss the World Cup after suffered a leg injury prior to the team arriving in Brazil. England will likely be without Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain after spraining his knee in one of the friendly matches leading up to the start of the tournament.
Tony’s Pick
England and Italy played to a 0-0 draw at Euro 2012 that resulted in Italy advancing via penalty kicks. England will play much more inspired football this time around, and that positivity will show both on the field and on the scoreboard after the full 90 minutes. England’s group of youngsters were not around in Poland and Ukraine two years ago, so new lifeblood for the team will flow, starting in this match against Italy. 2-0 win for England.
