2014 World Cup Free Picks: Chile vs. Australia
6 p.m., Friday, June 13 – Arena Pantanal, Cuiaba (ESPN2)
Match Betting Lines
Chile are heavy favorites at -225 to beat Australia in this match. The Socceroos are +650 underdogs in their Group B opener. The draw is listed at +300. The total for this match is 2.5, +105 for the ‘over’ and -125 for the ‘under’.
Chile
With so much attention given to other South American teams like Brazil and Argentina, the stage is set for Chile to sneak up as a potential dark horse. Most think this group draw won’t allow them to do that, however I think Chile is a scary proposition for both Spain and Holland. Not only do I see them getting through group play and beating out one of the two Group B favorites, but they will be a difficult draw once the knockout stages begin.
Australia
No other team has three more talented opponents in front of them than Australia does with their group B gauntlet of a schedule. Quite frankly, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Aussies lose all three matches, as they are outmatched by each of their prospective opponents. This is a tough ask for them here, no question about it.
Match Analysis
Chile is an explosive side, so don’t sleep on them. This match is going to be a rout in favor of the South American side. Chile boast two dynamo speedsters in Arturo Vidal of Juventus and Barcelona’s Alexis Sanchez. Australia won’t have an answer for either. Pace and overall skill leaves this match in the hands of Chile, and I see a multi-goal victory for them to begin their World Cup schedule. This will be an impressive performance and one that sets the tone for their tournament as a whole.
Key Injuries, Suspensions, Yellow Cards
Both teams enter the tournament as healthy as could be expected.
Guy’s Pick
Chile is going to put on a show as they announce to Spain and Holland their World Cup intentions. The price tag of heavy favorites will be validated as Chile’s speed wins out in a big way. 3-1 result to the Chileans thanks to some impressive play by the duo of Vidal and Sanchez.
