2014 World Cup Free Picks: Algeria vs. Russia
4 p.m., Thursday, June 26 – Estadio Beria-Rio, Porto Alegre (ESPN2)
Match Betting Lines
Algeria is seen as solid +250 underdogs in their last group stage match, while Russia is consensus +110 favorites. The draw is priced at +250 with the total at 2.5 goals.
Algeria
From an objective point of view, Algeria’s victory over South Korea was one of the better offensive performances of the group stages. Yes, the defensive struggles of the opponents played a factor, however the attacking brand of football that was played was immensely fun to watch and it gave this team momentum heading into a huge match that will likely need a similar result to see the Fennec Foxes book a spot into the elimination rounds.
Russia
Fabio Capello’s style of football just does not suit Russia. Prior to the Italian taking the reins, Russia was an offensively inclined outfit that loved throwing bodies forward toward the opposition’s goal. Now, they have seemingly been reduced to a defensive team that looks for its chances to counter attack. That hasn’t worked this tournament, and they are anything but a victory away from exiting Brazil after the group stages.
Match Analysis
If Algeria get so much as a draw then they are through to the Round of 16 in true underdog fashion. They will be conscious of that to make sure not to give up any cheap goals or bad mistakes. Russia needs a victory, so maybe we will see that old style of attacking football from the Russians in this match. This is an exciting match because both teams need a result here and will employ different tactics to get it done. This is a true clash of character and styles of play.
Key Injuries, Suspensions, Yellow Cards
No suspensions in this match, but look for Russia to put in a more offensive game plan which could result in a few changes to their starting XI. Algeria will surely keep their same line-up from their impressive win over South Korea last match.
Tony’s Pick
Money should be on Algeria to get a result. I am not sure they can repeat their efforts against South Korea here, but they will play well enough for a draw and secure one the group’s top spots. Russia would need a nearly perfect performance to win, and I cannot see that based on what they have shown at this tournament thus far.
