The Michigan Panthers (0-1) will go heads up with the New Jersey Generals (0-1) in Week 2 of this USFL season. New Jersey scored 24 points in their first outing while the Panthers notched 12 points. Both teams had similar passing games with the Panthers finishing with 173 yards through the air and the Generals finishing with 186. New Jersey currently has the better rushing game with 223 in their last outing. However, they allowed 205 passing yards compared to 74 yards in which the panthers allowed through the air. Looks like Shea Patterson might have a big day if the trends continue.
Michigan Panthers
Last Sunday, the Michigan Panthers faced the Houston Gamblers and lost a close one by the score of 17-12. Houston came out hot and scored all 17 of their points in the first half behind a strong defensive performance. Reggie Northrup returned a fumble 87 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter which put the Panthers down. This was a point to note in this game. Turnovers were key and the Panthers had three on the day versus Houston's one interception thrown. That said, Patterson and the Panthers made a push in the second half but ended up coming up short in this one.
Shea Patterson had a strong game going 17-of-25 for 192 yards and a touchdown. He had a completion percentage of 68.0 and he finished with a QBR of 104.1. He was clearly the better quarterback on the field, but turnovers killed them. Stevie Scott III rushed for 72 yards on 18 attempts for an average of 4.0. He also finished the day with a touchdown. Cameron Scarlett also had a nice day on the ground with 66 yards on 15 rushes for an average of 4.4 yards per carry. Overall, the Panthers racked up 190 yards on the ground, but it wasn't enough. Cutting down on the turnovers will prove crucial for the Panthers if they don't want to start off the season 0-2.
New Jersey Generals
The Generals were also on the short end of the stick with a 28-24 loss to the Birmingham Stallions. This was an exciting back and forth game with the Birmingham Stallions barley escaping their first game of the season with a win. Both sides started off hot with opening drive touchdowns by both teams, but quickly slowed down as there was not much happening on the offensive side of the ball until late in the second half.
Birmingham started the second half without their starting QB in Alex McGough who was injured in the first half. He was picked up by J'Mar Smith who finished the game going 11-of-21 for 156 yards and 2 touchdowns (one via the rush). With Smith's rushing TD, the Stallions took a lead with 23 seconds to go. It was all that was needed as the Stallions held on for the win.
Luis Perez finished this game going 13-of-18 for 143 yards through the air and two touchdowns for the Generals. Deandre Johnson also had a great game on the ground, rushing the ball 12 times for 98 yards, giving him an average of 8.2 yards per carry. He wasn't the only back that had a good day either. Darius Victor finished with 66 yards on 15 carries and Trey Williams finished the game with 54 yards on 13 carries. Overall, the Generals finished this game with 222 yards on the ground via 44 carries which gave them an average of 5 yards per tote.
The Generals will look to bounce back this week against an 0-1 Michigan Panthers team.
