Jordan Thompson vs Juan Martin Del Potro
4am EST, 1st June 2019
Roland Garros (Paris, France)
Intro
This guy just can't get a break. He was on and off the court throughout most of his professional career. That left wrist injury was the one bothering him the most. It kept him sidelined for a long time. Had to play through the pain after numerous surgeries which also affected the way he plays the game, especially his backhand. Now every time he calls a trainer to the court, every tennis fan holds his breath. A moment like that happened in the second set of his match vs Nishioka. He slipped and it seemed like he injured his knee. His movement after that was limited and there were questions whether he will be able to finish that match or not. He somehow fought through that adversity and won in 5 sets, proceeding to the next round. How is that injury going to feel in the next few days is going to be key for his performance in the next round. Bettors obviously made some assumptions about it already and the market moved big time after the odds got released.
Matchup
Jordan Thompson is someone that is not going to be easily recognized by a casual tennis fan. He is ranked pretty decent at #67, but that was achieved mostly through success on challengers, while on the main tour he is yet to have a true breakthrough. This 3rd round appearance is his best Grand slam result so far. As an Australian, it might be surprising that his playing style actually suits the clay courts really well, so he could be pretty underrated on this surface. Beating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina as an underdog in the first round is an indicator of that. But still, Del Potro is a completely different animal, comparing to both guys he faced in the previous two rounds. And I'm not that sure he's ready for it.
Betting odds & prediction
As I mentioned above already, the market reacted strongly after that Del Potro's knee injury. I'm not that opposed to that. With a sportsbook that has a favorable retirement rule, I can't argue going with +500 odds vs an injured player. But looking at the spread line, I believe there is a lot of value with Del Potro, created by that ML move. if he's unable to complete the match, spread and total are void. But if it turns out that injury was just a scare, he is able to steamroll Thompson and comfortably cover that line.
Tony's Pick: Juan Martin Del Potro -5.5 (-101)
