Adrian Mannarino vs Borna Coric

ATP Hertogenbosch, Netherlands
Grass courts
2 hours and 33 minutes were needed to determine the winner between two talented young players. Both Garin and Coric refused to go down, but the Croatian was slightly more resilient in the end, earning a spot in the semifinals in his debut appearance in Hertogenbosch. And what a way to do it! It seemed like Garin had the upper hand throughout the match. He looked more smooth and it seemed he had better timing on the ball. Coric was hanging in there thanks to a high 1st serve % which helped him produce 16 aces (with only 1 double fault). He waited for his opportunity and made the best out of it when he got it. Garin was two breaks up in the third and serving for the match at 5-2. At that point, the comeback started. Coric won 4 games in a row. Had to face a match point in the tie-break, but denied it with a beautifully struck ace on the line.

In the semifinals, he'll be playing Adrian Mannarino, who had a similar path to this stage of the tournament. Especially the quarterfinal match, where he fought back from a set behind, same as Coric. But, he did it as a huge underdog vs a much better grass court player then Garin, which is why he deserves a lot of credit for doing so. He was actually set and a break down. It looked like Goffin is in a cruise-mode and will get to the semifinals in no time. But, Mannarino started to feel some groove at that point. Rallies were becoming longer and Goffin was running out of answers for Mannarino's very good baseline game. Looking at some stats... 4/6 aces to double faults ratio and only 58% of points won is rarely enough for the win on grass courts. But, Frenchman did so well in these longer rallies that he managed to overcome that inability to produce some easy points of-of his serve.
Matchup
Mannarino surprisingly dominates the H2H matchup even though he's ranked much lower then Borna. And I am not surprised by that. Mannarino is a really difficult opponent to play against. He has the ability to take the pace out of the baseline exchange. And someone like Coric, who doesn't have that racket head speed on his forehand side to generate power and dictate the rally will struggle vs that type of opponent. He is way more comfortable as a defender, but vs Mannarino, he has to take over the initiative at times and that is not his strong suit. Adrian has a high tennis IQ. He uses so much variation on grass, making it very uncomfortable for his opponent and I don't think the Croatian can deal with all those different things. Changing grips and using all those different shots, manytimes taking them off-balance is not something he does best.

Despite the fact Mannarino might be a better grass court player and this matchup of playing styles favoring him, it was still not expected from linemakers to open him as a favorite vs No.14 in the world. But, Borna has very few things going for him here and I don't think he should be favored as much in this spot. He is for sure the better player overall between them two, but combining the grass surface and the opponent that has the ability to draw the worse out of him, is something that has to be factored into the price properly. Taking Mannarino at plus money here is the right play.
