In one of the most highly anticipated matches of the World Cup so far, France will be taking on defending champion United States in the quarterfinals on Friday afternoon. The United States will be the slight favorites going into this matchup of two of the highest ranked teams in the world.

Valerie Gauvin - Gauvin will be a player to watch in this match because she will be an isolated forward for France for much of this match. She will need to work hard to find openings against the Unites States' solid defense and put her shots on goal when she does get chances. Griedge Mbock Bathy - The young Lyon center back has played extremely well for France in this tournament, but she'll know that she's never faced an attack quite as good as the Americans' have. For the first time in this World Cup, the United States did not look unstoppable in that win over Spain. Head coach Jill Ellis will know that her players will need to be at their best if they are going to defeat France and move one step closer to retaining their World Cup crown.

Tobin Heath - Heath hasn't scored yet during this World Cup, but she definitely has been influential for the United States. She has done a great job of putting pressure on full backs from her right wing position. Expect more of the same from her when the Americans have the ball in this match.

Samantha Mewis - The United States will want more of the same from the 26-year-old midfielder. She has two goals so far in this tournament and she is tied for the lead in assists with superstar teammates Alex Morgan with three apiece. Mewis will also have a larger role to play on defense in this matchup as she will need to protect the left side of her defense when France is on the attack.
