2014 New York Rangers Predictions and NHL Futures Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 10/6/2014
Last year the Rangers accepted that they weren’t going to be able to re-sign captain Ryan Callahan. Instead of playing out the season with him and hoping for a change of heart in free agency, they got aggressive, shipping Callahan and two draft picks to the Lightning for Martin St. Louis. St. Louis is much older than Callahan, so it was definitely a move for now — at the expense of the future.
2014 Pittsburgh Penguins Predictions and NHL Futures Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 10/6/2014
We know two things about the Pittsburgh Penguins heading into this season. First, they are the most talented team in the Eastern Conference — at least. With Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin headlining a deep and talented roster, that is all but a given. Second, we know that all the talent in the world doesn’t matter anymore in Pittsburgh.
2014 San Jose Sharks Predictions and NHL Futures Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 10/6/2014
The Sharks topped 100 points for the seventh time in 10 years and opened up a fast 3-0 lead in their first-round playoff series against the Los Angeles Kings. Perhaps this was the year when they finally took advantage of their potential and did something in the playoffs. If you know how the playoffs ended, though, then you know that didn’t happen.
2014 Philadelphia Flyers Predictions and NHL Futures Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 10/6/2014
For the long term, the most noteworthy thing to come from the Philadelphia Flyers this offseason was a management shuffle. Paul Holmgren, the long-serving general manager, moved further up the ladder as president. That made way for Ron Hextall, the legendary former goalie for the team, to take over as GM. Hextall had been a big part of the success in L.A. before returning to the Flyers last year, and he has a very bright future in management. It’s a move that will keep the team moving in the right direction.
2014 New York Islanders Predictions and NHL Futures Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 10/6/2014
It’s funny how quickly things can change. A few days ago I was thinking about writing this preview because it was next on the list. At that time I had two things I was going to touch on. First, after a truly horrible start in the job, Garth Snow has quietly grown into the role of GM and has done a pretty good job of what I thought could be a playoff team here. What my biggest concern was, though, was the defense — especially the depth.
2014 New Jersey Devils Predictions and NHL Futures Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 10/1/2014
Like watching old dudes play hockey? Then this is the team for you. Jaromir Jagr, who will be 43 before the season ends, is the senior member of the squad, but at least a dozen potential roster members are in their 30s. In fact, for the most part this roster is either too old or too young — not an ideal mix. The good news at least is that some of the old guys still have some game, and some of the young guys are really talented.
2014 Nashville Predators Predictions and NHL Futures Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 10/1/2014
Last year the Nashville Predators weren’t likely to be any good even if everything went their way. Their only real hope of success was if Pekka Rinne, a truly elite goalie, could get hot enough to keep the team at least somewhat on track. But then disaster struck. Three weeks into the season Rinne was hurt and lost until March. When he returned he wasn’t any good, either.
2014 Los Angeles Kings Predictions and NHL Futures Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 9/30/2014
Hiring Darryl Sutter to coach this team was a risky move in 2012. After all, he was fresh off of running the Calgary Flames into the ground as general manager. Turns out there was no need to worry. He won the Stanley Cup in his first season with the team, and then he did it again last year.
2014 Detroit Red Wings Predictions and NHL Futures Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 9/30/2014
The Detroit Red Wings should be very thankful that the Atlanta Thrashers moved to Winnipeg. That set up a geographic imbalance in the league, and the solution was to move Winnipeg to the Western Conference last year and have Detroit and Columbus move to the East. That move is the only reason that the Wings were able to keep their 22-year playoff streak intact last year.
2014 Dallas Stars Predictions and NHL Futures Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 9/30/2014
Jim Nill became the GM of this team in April of 2013 after nearly 20 years in the Detroit organization. Just a couple of months later he took a major gamble when he paid a massive price for Tyler Seguin, the second overall pick in 2010, who Boston had given up on primarily because of off-ice maturity issues. It was a brilliant move — easily the best deal of the season in the NHL.
2014 Minnesota Wild Predictions and NHL Futures Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 9/30/2014
The Wild has the second-best year in their existence last year, but sadly that wasn’t a particularly high barrier to achieve. In 2003 they shockingly made it all the way to the conference final in just their third year in the league, but they had made the playoffs only three times since and had not won another round. Last year, though, they knocked out Colorado in seven games in the first round then tested Chicago seriously before falling in six contests.
2014 Florida Panthers Predictions and NHL Futures Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 9/30/2014
In 2012 the Florida Panthers somehow won their division and made the playoffs for the first time in an eternity. It was an inexplicable turn of events that makes less sense now than it did then — and that’s saying something. Since then, though, they have returned to being the same old franchise we know and ignore.
2014 Chicago Blackhawks Predictions and NHL Futures Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 9/29/2014
A year after winning both the President’s Trophy and the Stanley Cup, the Blackhawks finished just third in their division. That would be more of a concern than it was if they didn’t play in a deep division — there was no shame in falling behind Colorado and St. Louis, and they lasted longer in the postseason than either team.
2014 Colorado Avalanche Predictions and NHL Futures Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 9/29/2014
The Colorado Avalanche were unquestionably the biggest positive surprise of the NHL season last year. The year before they had finished second to last, and then had earned the first overall selection in the draft — taking Nathan McKinnon. They also overhauled their leadership, bringing back legendary goalie Patrick Roy to act as coach after he had gained experience owning and coaching a junior team.
2014 Columbus Blue Jackets Predictions and NHL Futures Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 9/29/2014
The Blue Jackets should be coming into this season with nothing but optimism and momentum. They got off to a slow start last season but closed very strong to make the playoffs and then gave the Penguins a real test in the six-game opening series. Instead of dreaming of the next step forward, though, the team is dealing with a horrible distraction.
2014 Carolina Hurricanes Predictions and NHL Futures Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 9/29/2014
It’s a good thing that I didn’t write this preview first. If I had then I would have likely focused quite a bit on Jordan Staal. After a disappointing season last year I was very optimistic about his ability to rebound this year and have a very strong season. He’s still only 26, and he had refocused this summer. He was going to be at the core of this team this year in a way that he never had before.
2014 Buffalo Sabres Predictions and NHL Futures Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 9/29/2014
If your house is already on fire and you can’t save it then you might as well pour some gas on the fire so that you don’t have as much clean up to do before you can start rebuilding. That’s the philosophy that the Buffalo Sabres embraced enthusiastically last year after a horrific start to their season — 4-15-1 in their first 20 games.
