Sunday night, the New York Islanders will take the ice at the Rexall Place as they face the Edmonton Oilers.
The New York Islanders will make the 3rd stop on a 7 game road trip after extending their win streak to 3 games following a 2 – 1 victory over the Calgary Flames on Friday night. New York scored the only goal of the 1st period when John Tavares lit the lamp on the power play midway through the 1st period to put the Islanders up 1 - 0. The Islanders still held that slim advantage after a scoreless 2nd period but things heated up in the final period. After Tavares notched his 2nd goal of the night late in the 3rd to make it a 2 -0 game, the Flames cut the lead in half with a goal of their own. It made for a tough final few minutes as New York held on for the win. While it was a win, it was a very sloppy win for the Islanders. Even against the Oilers, a crisper game will be needed.
The Edmonton Oilers dropped their 2nd straight game on Friday night after they fell 2 -1 to the Colorado Avalanche after a shootout. After a scoreless 1st period, the Avalanche got on the scoreboard first thanks to a Daniel Briere goal. That lead held until the 3rd when Benoit Pouliot tied things up with a goal on the power play. That goal sent the game to overtime and after a scoreless overtime period the teams proceeded to a shootout. The Avalanche score twice to open the shootout and that was all they needed to get the win. Edmonton went 1 for 3 on the power play while denying Colorado a goal on their 2 power play opportunities. They got some shots on goal but just couldn’t make things happen when they needed to. That seems to be the theme of the season for the Oilers.
