On March 2, the Philadelphia Flyers were able to edge out the Washington Capitals in overtime 5-4. Dmitry Orlov was having a career day after scoring two goals for the first time and was on his way to helping the Capitals take down the Flyers. This would all change when Orlov received a major penalty for boarding and had to take a seat for five minutes with a 4-2 lead. Jakub Voracek started the comeback off with a power play goal for the Flyers. Philadelphia then opted for the extra skater and sent Steve Mason off to have a seat. Claude Giroux was able to even the score with a goal at the 18:55 mark of the third period. Vincent Lecavalier was then able to finish the game off in overtime with a goal at the 2:45 mark.
Everything changed on that penalty from Orlov. Everyone knew the Flyers would make a hard push for the lead but the penalty by Orlov helped the process along and there was no looking back for the Flyers. This game would have potentially put Washington back in a playoff position and pass Philadelphia in the Metropolitan Division for the first time since Jan. 18.
Now the Capitals will be looking to get some revenge and try to finish what they had started in their previous game and start getting some wins against the Flyers. In the last 10 match-ups between these two division foes, Washington is just 3-7 against Philadelphia. One factor not helping the Capitals is this game is being played in the Wells Fargo Center and the home team has been favored in the six games between these two teams. Washington will surely have some motivation with this loss fresh on their minds.
