Wednesday night, the Washington Capitals will visit the New York Islanders.

The Washington Capitals fell just short as they took a 2 – 1 defeat to the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night.  Neither the Caps nor the Sabres could find a way to get the puck in the back of the net in the 1st period and the game remained scoreless well into the 2nd period until Buffalo broke the tie.  Washington wouldn’t get on the board until the 3rd period when @ 5:54, Matt Niskanen scored on the Capitals’ only power play of the night.  But the Sabres would get the game winner later on and end the Caps’ 2 game win streak.  Washington had their opportunities as they outshot Buffalo 44 to 26 and won the face-offs battle 36 to 24.  If the Capitals can take better advantage of the opportunities given to them, they might be able to start a new win streak against the Islanders.

The New York Islanders needed a shootout to get past the Philadelphia Flyers 1 – 0 on Monday night.  The game went scoreless for all three periods of regulation and an overtime period.  That meant that a shootout would have to decide the winner and the Islanders were ready right out of the gate.  They scored twice thanks to goals by Frans Nielsen and John Tavaras to take a 2 – 0 shootout lead.  New York goalie Jaroslav Halak did the rest of the work as he held off the Flyers for the rest of the shootout. The Islanders outshot the Flyers 46 to 21 but they just couldn’t get the puck in the net in regulation.  They will look to be more successful earlier on against the Capitals.
