The Washington Capitals and their high-scoring power play will take on the stingy penalty kill of the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday night. During the 2013-14 season, the Avs were able to win both of their games against the Caps.

The Capitals snapped their two-game losing skid on Tuesday by beating the Arizona Coyotes 2-1 in overtime. They were able to win that game by being more physical than the Coyotes, outhitting them 41-29.

Through 19 games, the Capitals have the third-best power play by scoring 24.6 percent of the time with the extra man. Center Nicklas Backstrom has four goals on the season and leads the team in assists with 12. Goalie Braden Holtby has a record of 6-4-2 with a .913 save percentage and a solid 2.28 GAA.

The Avalanche scored two goals in the third period of their game against the New Jersey Devils last Saturday to come away with a 3-2 road win. They only committed two penalties in that win and they outshot the Devils 29-25.

Through 19 games, the Avalanche have only been able to average 2.4 goals per game while their defense has given up 3.1 goals per game. Goaltender Semyon Varlamov has a 4-5-4 record on the season with one shutout and a .918 save percentage. Defenseman Tyson Barrie has one goal and a team-high 12 assists so far this year.
