The Carolina Hurricanes were able to get the 4-3 overtime win over the Washington Capitals when they last played each other. Washington has more points than their Metropolitan division foes, but the Hurricanes were able to take a 3-1 season series lead with that early January win.

Jeff Skinner was able to put the Hurricanes on top late in the first period with his 17th goal of the season on a power-play tally. Just 49 seconds into the second period, Alex Ovechkin scored his league-leading 31st goal to even up the score. After Manny Malhotra put the Hurricanes back up by one, Troy Brouwer and Steve Oleksy gave the Caps their first lead of the game. That didn't last long, though, as Skinner tied it up again with his second goal of the game.

After no goals were scored in the third period, Skinner got to be the hero for the third time in the game when he scored the game-winner past Washington goalie Philipp Grubauer at the 1:20 mark of the extra period. Malhotra and Ryan Murphy assisted on the overtime goal.

Skinner was the star of the night for the Hurricanes, but goalie Anton Khudobin had a solid game, as well. He was able to stop 38 shots and let just three get past him in the win.

Washington center Marcus Johansson had two assists in the losing effort.
