Playing his former team, Anaheim Ducks' coach Bruce Boudreau was looking to add a ninth straight win against the Capitals the last time these two teams met up. Two early goals by Washington put Boudreau's team on edge, but a late first period goal by the Ducks, a second period goal, and one last one about midway through the third gave the Ducks a lead that they held onto to take the victory over the Capitals 3-2.
The Capitals started things off 7:21 into the first-period when Mikhail Grabovski passed the puck over to Troy Brouwer on a two-on-one, Brouwer tapped the puck back over to Grabovski, who tapped it in past Goalie Jonas Hiller for Grabovski's 11th goal of the season. Then with 11:37 to go in the first, a power-play would put the Ducks down a man and the Capitals' Nicklas Backstrom took advantage. Receiving an assist from John Carlson, Backstrom popped one past the goaltender to give the Capitals a 2-point advantage.
Late in the first, the Ducks showed some signs of life when Andrew Cogliano assisted by Saku Koivu, managed to put a point on the board before the intermission. Saku Koivu also came through late in the second-period to score a goal that would tie the game up going into the second intermission. Then in the third, the Ducks were able to control the game enough to give Hampus Lindholm a chance that he took advantage of and put the Ducks up by one, ultimately bringing home their ninth straight win.
