The Toronto Maple Leafs last played the Washington Capitals on January 10th.  The Maple Leafs lost the game 3-2.  Capitals goalie Michal Neuvirth got his first start in seven weeks against the Maple Leafs and had a solid outing.  Neuvirth did not look rusty at all despite not starting for seven weeks and ended the game with thirty two saves.

Both of the Maple Leafs goals were given to them after decisions by the officials.  Nicklas Bäckström, Joel Ward and Alexander Ovechkin all scored for the Capitals.  Ward’s goal came early in the third period and would seal the victory for the Caps. The Maple Leafs had opportunities to tie the game up late, with their last shot on goal coming with only twelve seconds left on the clock, but Neuvirth would not allow Toronto to score.

Currently the Maple Leafs are 4-1 in their last five games and sit second in their division.  Toronto is thirteen points behind their division leader Boston and need the points from a win against the Capitals.  Washington is third to last in their division and a full twenty two points behind their division leader.
